I’m a Celebrity… South Africa viewers were left outraged after David Haye’s comments in an episode that aired on Monday night.
During a group conversation with his fellow campmates, David praised his girlfriend, Sian Osbourne, for being a good cook, before claiming: “She’s got a personality of a proper ugly bird.”
What did David Haye say?
As the conversation continued, fellow campmate Scarlett Moffatt quickly challenged him, saying: “You can’t say that, David.”
However, he went on to make further comments, including: “Most ugly girls realise they’re not pretty enough… they’ve got to have a personality to banter and tell jokes to overlook that they’re not aesthetically amazing straight away.
“Most ugly girls realise they’ve got to have a personality, it’s called Ugly Duckling syndrome, when girls are ugly when they start off, they get pretty as they get older, but they’ve still got the personality of when they’re ugly.
“You get a girl who was pretty from day one, everyone tells her she’s amazing, so she grows up thinking ‘I’m amazing, everyone loves me, I can open up any door, I can go anywhere I want’. They don’t have to have a personality because most super pretty girls are idiots.
“But their ugly friend, they’ve got to work a bit harder. They’ve got to be more personable, they’ve got to be nicer to everyone.”
What did the campmates say?
Throughout his remarks, campmates including Mo Farah, Sinitta, Ashley Roberts and Seann Walsh appeared visibly lost for words, while Scarlett laughed and responded: “Oh, dear God! What are you talking about, man?”
David’s comments come amid reports of a feud with fellow campmate Beverley Callard, after he sent the Coronation Street star to Savannah Scrub camp.
Speaking to WhichBingo?, Beverley said: “There were so many questions I wanted to ask him once we were in there, and I was thrown completely by his reaction to me. I thought it was ageist and sexist, and at that time, had no consideration for anybody else’s feelings whatsoever.”
She added that while the experience brought her closer to other campmates, the tension remains: “What I can say is the feud does go on. It’s not over, let me say that.”
Viewers react to David Haye’s comments
Angry viewers were quick to take to X to share their thoughts on David’s comments. “David Haye.. truly digging yourself into the biggest hole. Absolutely disgusting views. Not funny in the slightest,” penned one person.
Meanwhile, a second said: “I cannot believe the comments from him tonight. Nobody should ever call anyone else ugly,” while a third wrote: “Comments like those from David Haye about ‘ugly girls’ needing personality aren’t just outdated, they’re disrespectful and dehumanising. Even worse, most laughed instead of challenging it. More voices need to speak up when this kind of casual sexism gets a pass. Gross.”
A fourth added: “I need someone to humble David Haye so badly.”
David Haye’s throuple rumours explained
Rumours of David’s involvement in a “throuple” first emerged in 2022, when former The Saturdays singer Una Healy travelled to Ibiza with David and his girlfriend Sian.
After the trio later holidayed in Morocco together, Una shared a photo of them, writing: “I’ve started 2023 in a comfortable place, feeling genuinely happy and at peace. Here’s to this year being ours x”
However, speaking on My Therapist Ghosted Me, hosted by Vogue Williams and Joanne McNally, Una denied the rumours.
“I did meet [Sian], really nice girl. I didn’t get to know her very well, it wasn’t a throuple. The T word, I had to google it myself because I’d never heard it, I was like what is this? Why am I being called this name that I have never heard of, I don’t know what it is.”
Despite being in a relationship with Sian since 2020, David has also been romantically linked to fellow I’m a Celebrity campmate Helen Flanagan, who denies being in a throuple with the boxer.
Reflecting on the relationship, Helen explained: “He had a girlfriend and an open relationship. I didn’t mean to fall in love with him, but I did. We did have this amazing connection together – we were like fire. It was weird – I think he does love his girlfriend, and he loves me as well. It just brings me to a part in my life that was quite dark.”
