Anna Wintour let her hair down on the Met Gala green carpet on Monday night, as she watched Broadway star Josh Henry perform Whitney Houston’s smash hit “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” on the steps of the famed museum.

The global editorial director of Vogue could be seen taking in the show-stopping performance at the bottom of the steps with the Gala’s co-chair, Nicole Kidman, and honorary co-chair, Lauren Sánchez.

She swayed side to side in her typical reserved fashion, with her hands resting in front of her. Anna wowed in a turquoise and black embroidered Chanel gown with a matching feathery jacket, which she paired with a long jeweled necklace.

The fashion icon added her signature oversized black sunglasses and strappy black heels to complete the look, and wore her hair in a classic bob.

Beside her, Nicole danced in a red sequined Chanel gown with feathered detailing at the hips and cuffs, and Lauren moved in a navy gown with a plunging neckline inspired by a scandalous piece of art from the 1800s. BeyoncĂ© and Venus Williams also acted as co-chairs on fashion’s night of nights.

Anna previously worked as Vogue‘s editor-in-chief for 37 years, and stepped back from the role in 2025 to make way for Chloe Malle. Anna shifted roles to become the global editorial director of Vogue and the Chief Content Officer of CondĂ© Nast, for which she oversees publications like Vanity Fair, GQ, Glamour and WIRED.

“I find that my greatest pleasure is helping the next generation of impassioned editors storm the field with their own ideas, supported by a new, exciting view of what a major media company can be,” she said in a statement announcing her new role. “And that is exactly the kind of person we need to now look for to be HOEC for US Vogue.”

“Fashion and media are both evolving at breakneck speed, and I am so thrilled – and awed – to be part of that,” said Chloe in a press release. “I also feel incredibly fortunate to still have Anna just down the hall as my mentor.”

Anna, who inspired the hit 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada and its 2026 sequel, runs a tight ship when it comes to the Met Gala and has implemented several rules to preserve the glamor and mystery of the night.

No phones are allowed at the event, although that hasn’t stopped some celebrities, like Kylie Jenner, from snapping a bathroom selfie or two. “It’s often wonderful to hear, after dinner, people say, ‘Oh, we had the most wonderful conversations,'” Anna shared on the Today show. “So that’s the idea, that life can exist without a picture on your cell phone.”

She added that none of the food included chives, onions or too much garlic, as “those are three things I’m not particularly fond of”. All guests are required to stick to the theme each year, and no smoking is allowed at the museum.
