Amanda Owen is a seasoned shepherdess and often shares the tricks of the trade on her Instagram.
The Our Yorkshire Farm star works long hours in order to maintain her farm in Swaledale, and recently shared a candid insight into some of the more graphic aspects of her job in a series of videos.
Issuing warnings to sensitive viewers, Amanda explained the realities of lambing season by showing how she uses the hide of a dead lamb to help disguise another lamb as the sheep’s own.
In one video, the shepherdess shouted out one particular TV show that inspired the technique – and it’s a fan favourite we can all agree harbours a special place in animal lovers’ hearts.
Amanda’s inspiration behind farming technique
In the caption of one of the videos, Amanda wrote: “Here goes. *Whenever I do this I always remember watching All Creatures Great & Small. As a child, I was transfixed when, in a particular episode, a mare had lost a foal at birth.
“A neighbouring yard had an orphan foal and by using the skin of the deceased foal, they were able to solve the problem in one fell swoop.* If I remember correctly the two owners were at odds with each other too. That was cured an’ all.”

Fans were quick to take to the comments to commend Amanda’s technique, with one writing: “One does what needs to be done. Better than losing another lamb,” while another penned: “Sad the lamb had to die, but brilliant helping another one live.”
Meanwhile, others reminisced about the original BBC series of All Creatures Great & Small, which aired in the 1970s and 1980s and starred Christopher Timothy as James Herriot.

Alongside her own farming techniques, Amanda often shares a glimpse of how she instills her practices on to her nine children.
Sharing a picture of two of her daughters, the shepherdess penned in a recent Instagram post: “The children were keen to see what fresh new shoots they could find for Michelle, Shelby and Shelly. Ramson and moss crop brought them out of their shell.”
She followed up with another snapshot of her three young daughters helping to nurse two baby lambs while they perched on top of the railings in one of their barns housing sheep. “Just images that make me smile,” wrote Amanda.
