Alanis Morissette celebrates major milestone with rarely-seen husband by her side

Alanis Morissette made a rare red carpet appearance with her husband of 16 years, rapper Mario “Souleye” Treadway, as she was honored at the Songwriters Hall of Fame Ceremony on Thursday night.

The 52-year-old rocker looked stunning in a semi-sheer black gown with cascading metallic gold and silver sequins. She paired the look with a structured black blazer and black pointed shoes, and wore her long brunette tresses straight down past her shoulders.

Her husband looked dapper in a black suit over a white button-up shirt, with the collar partially open to reveal a green pendant necklace, and sneakers to complete the look.

Mario couldn’t seem to take his eyes off Alanis, who was being celebrated for her decades-long career featuring hits like “Hand in My Pocket”, “You Oughta Know” and “Ironic”. 

Alanis released her most recent album, The Storm Before the Calm, in 2022, and shared in 2024 that she had begun working on her next musical project. She is also set to perform at the FIFA World Cup Opening Ceremony in Toronto on Friday, alongside fellow Canadians Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Michael Bublé and Nora Fatehi, amongst others. 

Alanis’ rare outing on Thursday with her husband pointed to his steadfast support of the Grammy winner on the milestone occasion. The pair previously collaborated on his 2013 album Iron Horse Running, and on the 2017 song “Soul Angel”.

“It was an honor to work with my wife on this song,” he told Fuse. “Not only does she inspire me as an artist, but she ceaselessly fluffs my ego. She is also hilarious so we were having a blast together.”

Alanis and Mario first met at a meditation retreat in 2009, and tied the knot the following year. “When I first met Souleye, I was a really big fan – like super crushed out,” Alanis told Billboard. “I had no thought that we’d be able to even date.”

They then welcomed their son, Ever, in 2010, followed by their daughter, Onyx, six years later, and their final child, Winter, in 2019.

Their marriage has only grown stronger over the years since becoming parents, as Alanis explained to CNN. “[It was our] values being the same,” she said. “So, for me, things like partnership, family, commitment, and seeing marriage as a hotbed for growth and healing.”

The mother of three was previously in a high-profile relationship with Ryan Reynolds, and the pair were engaged for three years before calling it quits in 2007. Alanis shared with Oprah Winfrey that Mario was wholly different from her past partners as she instantly saw her future with him. 

“I would date people, and there would be something about me that would hit a brick wall with whomever I was sitting across from,” she said. “And with Souleye, when I first met him, I could see that there was this limitlessness to where we could go.” She added that their marriage was “really interesting and really challenging and really beautiful”.
