Zendaya wonât be tuning in to Dancing with the Stars any time soon.
The 28-year-old actress placed second on season 16 of the ballroom dance competition series more than a decade ago. But her experience stays with her â so much so that sheâll admit sheâs âstill harboring a little animosityâ about losing.
âI felt that loss. I was only 16 years old, and it was highly stressful,â she told W Magazine. âBeing on live television every week? Itâs so scary.â
In retrospect, the Challengers star, who competed with Val Chmerkovskiy, said she wishes she âdidnâtâ take the show as âseriouslyâ as she did.
âI wish Iâd enjoyed it a little bit more and just was like, âEh, whatever.â You know what I mean? But I was stressing myself out. I really went through it on that.â
With the loss still stinging (Kellie Pickler and her partner Derek Hough took home the mirrorball trophy on Zendayaâs season), she admitted she doesnât watch the show at all anymore. Yet, that doesnât mean sheâs not tuning into other hit reality TV shows.
âI love, unfortunately, Love Is Blind, and then I feel bad for watching it,â she told the outlet, calling the Netflix dating series a âguilty pleasure.â
âItâs brutal. Iâm like, âDang, you guys know youâre on camera?'â
Itâs not the first time Zendaya has reflected poorly on her experience on DWTS. In October, during an appearance on Entertainment Weeklyâs Awardist podcast, she said she hadnât been much of an audience member before competing on the show, either.
âI have not watched Dancing With the Stars since I was on,â she said. âI didnât really watch Dancing With the Stars before I was on Dancing With the Stars. I donât think I was the target demographic. My grandma loves Dancing With the Stars, thatâs her bag.â
She also called it a âvery stressful experience,â which is part of the reason why she doesnât tune in now. âI was like, I donât think Iâm gonna be watching this anymore.â
Zendaya is not the only former DWTS contestant to reflect negatively on her experience on the show. Over the last year, several former contestants have admitted to believing the show is âriggedâ to keep certain stars on longer.
Danica McKellar, who competed on season 18, told Cheryl Burke on her podcast in November that the series is âa reality show, not a dance competition.â

Antonio SabĂĄto Jr. similarly called the show âriggedâ on Burkeâs podcast two months prior, as he alleged, âIf youâre not a dancer or you donât have dancing skills from a young age â youâre not gonna win.â
He also said that he thinks the judges âknow who they wantâ to stay on the show, âso you gotta keep that persona.â
