Youngblood Frontman Jesse Colin Young’s Cause of Death Revealed

The cause of death for Jesse Colin Young has been revealed.

The Aiken County Coroner’s Office confirmed to PEOPLE that the Youngblood frontman’s cause of death is “complications of cardiac, atherosclerotic and hypertensive cardiovascular disease” and the manner of death was natural. Young died on Sunday, March 16. He was 83.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce music legend Jesse Colin Young, who left a unique mark on the intersecting worlds of folk, blues, jazz, country, and rock & roll, died in his home in Aiken, South Carolina yesterday afternoon,” a statement shared with PEOPLE on March 17 read.

His death was announced by his wife and manager, Connie Young.

Young, a New York native born in Perry Miller in 1941, attended New York University before dropping out to persue a solo career before forming the Youngbloods, per The New York Times. He released solo albums The Soul of a City Boy and Young Blood in 1964 and 1965, respectively.

He met Jerry Corbitt in Cambridge, Mass. in the mid-60s. Pianist-guitarist Lowell Levinger and drummer Joe Bauer joined the pair to form the Youngbloods, whose music became the soundtrack of Greenwich Village’s Cafe Au Go Go. They released several albums until they disbanded in 1972.

During his stint with the band, “he immortalized the ideals of the Woodstock generation with ‘Get Together,’ an international hit that called for peace and brotherhood during the turbulent 1960s,” the statement continued. Young sang the track “Get Together,” which was originally written by Dino Valenti using the pseudonym Chet Powers.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Youngbloods’ rendition of the song would become an international hit after it was used in a public service ad for the National Council of Christians and Jews in 1969.

“During the decades that followed, Young expanded both his audience and his artistic range, releasing a string of solo albums that mixed socially conscious lyrics with top-tier guitar skills and gorgeous vocals,” the statement provided to PEOPLE continued.

After the Youngbloods disbanded, Young became “an acclaimed songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, producer, label owner, podcast host, and longtime social/environmental activist.”

It concluded, “He has established a permanent place in America’s musical landscape – while continuing to make modern music that’s every bit as vital as his work during the counterculture era.”
