The murder of 40-year-old Lisa Carabello remains unsolved nearly 25 years after she was slashed and stabbed to death in her Pennsylvania home.

With the upcoming 25th anniversary of her death on February 8, Pennsylvania State Police are again calling on the public for tips that could help lead them to her killer, according to FOX43.

On February 8, 2001, Carabello had been at the top of her stairway inside her Mohnton Borough, Berks County, home when “someone slashed her from behind,” state police said in a news release issued in January 2025.

Carabello fell down the stairs and was ultimately found dead with a fatal neck wound and several stab wounds, according to police.

Her 11-year-old son located Carabello’s body upon his arrival from school that day, according to investigators, the Reading Eagle reported.

There were no signs that someone had broken into Carabello’s home, police said.

Investigators have returned to the Colorado home once occupied by the family of JonBenét Ramsey and collected new evidence for testing, authorities revealed. Each year as the anniversary of the 6-year-old’s 1996 death approaches, the Boulder Police Department provides an update on the case, which they claim is active and ongoing. “Last year we gave […]

State police spokesperson Ethan M. Brownback told FOX43 that “Unfortunately, we do not have anything new to add to the case, but we are reviewing the available evidence and exploring further forensic testing.”

Her estranged husband, John C. Carabello, was once considered a person of interest in her death, State Police Corporal Robert Hess — who previously led the agency’s Troop L cold case unit — told the Reading Eagle following John’s death in 2016. John died from cancer, according to the newspaper.

“I still believe there is at least one if not more people out there who knows exactly what happened and who did it,” Hess said to the newspaper in 2016. “People pass away. Cases get old. And sometimes, people don’t mind talking about things that are old because threats are not fresh anymore.”

John, who had a plastering, stone and stucco business, died in April 2016, according to his online obituary, which briefly mentions Lisa’s passing.

More than three years after Lisa’s death, John remarried, the obituary says.

Lisa was a graduate of Wilson High School in Reading, where she had a close group of friends made up of 9 other students, the Reading Eagle reported. In 2016, the 9 women traveled to Mohnton to help dedicate a park bench in Carabello’s memory.

“Remembering Lisa brings me again to shake my head in disbelief as chills run through my body, thinking, ‘How could an outgoing, friendly, kind woman be murdered in such a horrific way?’” one of the women, Michele Greth, told the newspaper at the time.

Pennsylvania State Police are offering a $5,000 reward for information that solves Carabello’s cold case murder.

Brownback confirmed to Us Weekly on February 6 that investigators “are continuing to review this case and test evidence.”

On Fridays, Pennsylvania State Police feature a cold case that investigators are looking to solve on their Facebook account.

On February 6, the agency shared that a $5,000 reward is being offered for the 1977 disappearance of Randall Brosius.

The Valley View resident was 22 at the time he disappeared, according to police.

State police ask anyone with information on Lisa’s death to call the agency’s Reading office at 610-378-4011 or Pennsylvania State Police Tips at 1-800-4PA-TIPS. Online tips can also be submitted.
