A woman says that after countless nights of being woken up by cars playing loud music outside her home, she finally cracked — literally.
In a post on the U.K. community forum Mumsnet.com, the woman confessed to throwing “an egg at a car in an insomnia-fueled rage,” as she jokingly branded herself “the egg vigilante.”
She detailed what led up to the incident, explaining that she lives in a block of apartments with “a turning square for cars outside.” Much to her frustration, the space “attracts antisocial behavior, especially during warmer months.”
“We tend to get cars parking up and people congregating there during the night, with people playing music and chatting/shouting away at all hours,” the woman wrote, noting that she’s often been woken up multiple times in a single night.
Describing the street noise as “a real blight” on her and her neighbors’ lives, the woman said she’s given a lot of thought to how to remedy the situation, to no avail.
“Last year I thought seriously about what I could do to try and get the noise dealt with by the council, but from research (and past experience about a noisy neighbor), I don’t think this is likely to be effective,” she wrote.
“I’ve also thought about going out there and asking people to be quiet, but given how inconsiderate they are being, I doubt this would work (and feels potentially dangerous),” the woman continued, before explaining that she ultimately admitted defeat.
“After thinking about it, I decided there was nothing I could really do to solve this, and it was just one of those things, and I’d have to lump it,” she shared.
That is, until she found herself in the midst of a particularly “tough week” that included “getting some bad health news,” “suffering from a bit of insomnia” and feeling “stretched thin” at her demanding job.
So when she was “jolted awake at 3:30 a.m. by loud music booming from a car” on the night in question, the woman said she had reached her limit.
“When I saw the car parked there, blaring music so loudly and probably waking at least a hundred people up in the overlooking flats, I was so incensed that I ran into the kitchen, grabbed an egg and lobbed it from the window,” she recalled. “The egg splatted harmlessly next to the car, which drove away sharpish.”

In the comments section of the post, users had mixed reactions to the woman’s eggy revenge, with some praising her for standing up to the noisemaker.
“I think you were remarkably restrained. Work on perfecting your aim though,” one user wrote, as another commented: “I’m sorry OP but this made me laugh! I don’t think you are being unreasonable at all as sleep deprivation is the worst, and they were being very antisocial at a ridiculous time of the night.”
One other posted quipped: “Not trying to egg you on, but I can understand eggsactly why you did it .”
Others, meanwhile, accused the woman of being “reckless.”
“I would be concerned about retaliation. Throwing eggs at cars with strangers is quite stupid,” one user wrote. “I understand how frustrating it is to have noise like that, but unless it is the same cars repeatedly (so you can take their license and report) there’s nothing you can do. You are very lucky they drove away instead of either damaging your property or trying to get to you.”
Someone else cautioned the woman that she could have hurt someone or damaged property. “I’ve been hit by an egg before and it’s really painful. You could properly damage the bodywork or smash glass — not that they don’t deserve it — but you could be in a world of pain if they retaliate or go to police,” that user said.
