A New Yorker got quite the surprise when she looked outside the window of her new apartment and found a man sleeping in her backyard.
A TikTok user with the handle @rheisabel posted a video of the unusual sight — which was shared by her roommate and garnered more than 300K views and 500 comments in just a little over a week.
In the video, a woman could be heard saying, “Guys, what the f—?” as she walked over to the window at her new apartment. She then panned down to show what appeared to be a man sleeping in a queen-size mattress outside in the middle of a garden space.
The man was lying on a white mattress with white quilted bedding and a white pillow. A phone and an iPad could be seen next to his head. “What the actual hell? What is happening? Guys? Guys?” the woman said as she zoomed in to show the man sleeping outside.
Over the video, the TikTok user wrote, “Update on our move from the West Village to the East Village…”
Several people responded to the video, seemingly just as shocked by the backyard bedroom setup. One person commented, “How is it so clean though?” Another wrote, “Why are we even concerned, he’s surrounded by three Apple products and a memory foam pillow.”

One person commented that the person who shot the video should “leave him alone,” to which the TikToker replied, “We are the only ones living in the building so naturally we were surprised to see someone in the backyard sleeping.”
Another person joked about the fact that the sight was located in New York City — which is known for its high rent prices — writing, “Studio apartment with outdoor space and tons of natural light, a bargain at $3000/month.” Someone else chimed in, “To be fair, I lived in the West Village and found the East Village far more entertaining for reasons like this 😂.”
Another user wrote, “This is least worrying NYC behavior I’ve seen on this app lol,” to which the TikToker responded, “Oh I totally agree lol there is way worse stuff.”
The woman who posted the video told the New York Post that she “got a ton of hate” for the post and declined to provide any more information on the incident.
This isn’t the strangest place that a person has been caught sleeping in N.Y.C. In 2018, someone shared a video on YouTube of a man blowing up a green air mattress on the subway — and then placing a pillow and blanket on top of it. The man then got into the bed, took his shirt off and put the blanket over himself before attempting to sleep on the bustling train.
