A recent meal with a friend has left a bitter taste in one woman’s mouth.
The woman recounted her head-scratching experience in a post on the U.K.-based forum Mumsnet, describing how she invited a friend over for a home-cooked meal but ended up ordering takeout at the friend’s request.
“I was going to cook [spaghetti carbonara], but she asked if I fancied a curry. I said that would be really nice actually,” she explained, noting the friend’s food-delivery app “wasn’t working,” so they used hers instead.
The woman said the pair picked their meals, which totaled around $67 — and her friend’s selections accounted for “over 65% of that cost.”
“I said I could just check out and sort it later,” she recalled. “I have messaged to ask if she had the money today as a gentle reminder, and she said she thought it was my treat.”
The friend responded that she had picked up wine and snacks from the corner shop for them, but the woman emphasized she had only asked for one item from there: “I got a grape Fanta!”
The woman elaborated, “The wine (I don’t drink) and snacks were for her, and she took the remaining snacks home with her.”

Seeking advice, the woman asked on Mumsnet, “Where do I go from here? Leave it? Was it reasonable for her to assume it was in fact my treat?”
One reader quickly replied, “And the answer to anyone who ever says ‘I thought it was your treat’ is ‘what made you think that?’ ”
Most readers agreed that the friend should pay her back.
“Get back to her and tell her exactly what she owes you. You may not get it and be prepared to never see her again,” one person suggested. “I think she’s taken advantage of your kindness.”
