The curtain is closing on 9-1-1: Lone Star.

In September 2024, FOX announced that the popular procedural drama — led by Rob Lowe and starring Ronen Rubinstein and Gina Torres — would conclude with its fifth and final season. The last action-packed episode aired on Feb. 3, and Natacha Karam (who plays Marjan Marwani in the series) warned fans not to get “too comfortable.”

“Every time you think it’s over, it’s not, so keep those tissues next to you,” the actress told TVLine in January 2025. “There’s a line in the last episode where Judd (Jim Parrack) says, ‘I love you all more than I love my own brothers,’ and that line gets me every time. When I watched that scene for the first time, tears were pooling on my chin.”

However, while fans will have to say goodbye to the Texas-based show, creator Ryan Murphy is already working on another 9-1-1 spinoff to take its place, which will be set in an entirely new location.

So why is 9-1-1: Lone Star coming to an end after a five-season run? Here’s everything we know about the series’ cancellation and the latest spinoff in the works.

Why was 9-1-1: Lone Star canceled?

Showrunner Ryan Murphy told Variety in October 2024 that despite its popularity, 9-1-1: Lone Star was being canceled due to financial reasons.

“Sadly, we all love ‘Lone Star,’ but the financials just didn’t work,” he said. “It’s a Disney company that was on a Fox network, and it just was never going to work. And we had a long run of it.”

9-1-1: Lone Star first premiered on Fox in 2020 and ran for five seasons.

What has Rob Lowe said about the 9-1-1: Lone Star finale?

In addition to starring in the series, Lowe has also served as an executive producer for the popular 9-1-1 spinoff. Prior to the FOX announcement, the Unstable actor told Variety that he believed the show’s ending was near.

“We all went into it pretty much knowing that it was going to be the last season, so that affected everything we did,” Lowe told the outlet in August 2024. “We wanted to really show everybody what is still possible in network television if people have the appetite to do it. It feels like it’s probably the end of an era of a certain type — well, it doesn’t feel like it. It is the end of an era of a certain type of show we once had an opportunity to make, and I think they’re great.”

He continued, “We wanted to go out making our case for the value of shows like that, and I think we did a really good job. The stories that we were able to tell on a weekly basis in terms of the scope and scale — that’s probably the thing I’m the most proud of. They were truly like mini-movies every week.”

Is there going to be a spinoff after 9-1-1: Lone Star?

Even though Lone Star is coming to an end, Murphy did tease that a new 9-1-1 spinoff could make its small-screen debut as early as fall 2026.

“Tim Minear and I are working on a new spinoff that we’re actually writing, and that we hope to get on the air next fall,” he told Variety. “Now we’re going to launch a new show in a new city that I can’t name, but it’s fun. And 9-1-1 moved to ABC and suddenly became, I think, the biggest show on Thursday night. They obviously have an appetite for that, so we’re going to give them another one that I really love.”

Few details about the new series have been confirmed. However, Deadline reported in October 2024 that Hawaii was being considered as the show’s location.

Will any 9-1-1: Lone Star cast members return to the spinoff?

The cast for the new offshoot, which would be the third show in the 9-1-1 franchise, hasn’t been confirmed. Showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine in December 2024 that while he has “no current plans” to bring any Lone Star characters to the new series, continuing those storylines in a new setting is “not impossible.”

Will there be new episodes of 9-1-1?

The original 9-1-1 series — which stars Angela Bassett and Peter Krause and follows the lives of first responders in Los Angeles — premiered in 2018. Though it has yet to be renewed for another installment, the final episodes of season 8 will return to ABC on March 6.

Fans can catch up on the first episodes of season 8 on the ABC website or stream all eight seasons on Hulu.
