Why Kyra Segwick was ‘so nervous’ to work with husband Kevin Bacon and both their kids

Fans of Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon are no strangers to seeing them collaborate with their kids, especially on social media, but now they are taking it to the big screen.

The The Summer I Turned Pretty actress and Footloose actor have been married since 1988, and are parents to son Travis, 36, and daughter Sosie, 33.

The couple has worked both with each other and with their kids on separate projects, but now, all four of them have worked on a new project for the first time together, and they are taking it to the big screen.

Kyra, speaking with the rest of her family with Entertainment Tonight, detailed how the project, a horror-comedy movie fittingly titled Family Movie, came to be, shared: “I don’t think that we were necessarily looking for something to do together,” and that in fact, she was “nervous” to pitch it to Sosie and Travis, and later surprised by their enthusiasm.

“We pitched it to the kids, thinking that they probably wouldn’t be into it,” she said, adding: “I was so nervous. And they actually said yes. I was like, ‘Wait, what? You wanna work with your parents?’ It was pretty monumental.”

“Oh, I had reservations for sure,” Sosie did admit, noting: “I think we all were concerned that things would come up, we would get into arguments…little tensions and stuff would arise. In this situation, because we’re on set, tensions are already really high.”

However, she next shared: “It ended up being the opposite. Like, we had no tension. We were so collaborative. And I don’t think any of us expected that going into it, how easy it was, and how nice everybody was to each other.

“It felt extremely collaborative and like everybody’s voices were heard. It was magical,” her brother Travis concurred.

Family Movie will premiere March 13 at the SXSW Film & TV Festival. It follows a filmmaking family who finds themselves in a real-life horror movie when a body turns up on the set of their low-budget slasher, forcing them to cover up the murder to keep filming.

Kyra and Kevin have both also talked to HELLO! about working with their kids; Sosie is an actress, best known for the horror film Smile, and Travis is a composer, as well as part of a heavy metal band.

“It’s a little nepotism, but it’s always worth it,” Kyra told us at the 2022 premiere of her film Space Oddity, which also starred Kevin, adding: “They’re amazing at what they do, and they know my brain. So it’s nice.”

Kevin also said of being directed by his wife: “I loved being directed by my wife… She’s a fantastic director. She has a very clear vision both with the way things look and feel,” and that what makes him the proudest is when she gives him tips and tweaks. [The kids] support us and we support them. We all work together in different kinds of capacities … We like to work together, we don’t do it just because it’s family, we do it because we like the work, the creative process.”
