Yellowstone‘s spinoff show Marshals came in hot in a major way, as it premiered on March 1.
Fans noted that Kelsey Asbille‘s portrayal of Monica was back on their screens, but only for a temporary moment.
Spoiler alert: Monica, who plays Kayce Dutton’s wife on the series, was axed off already, during the debut episode, believe it or not.
Another dramatic twist was that Monica didn’t have any lines for her brief appearance – instead, once the new series kicked off, she had already passed away.
The exact breakdown of the scene involved Kayce, portrayed by Luke Grimes, having a nightmare that during his military mission, Monica called him in a panic.
Next thing you know, Kayce woke up to realize it was a bad dream. During the episode, he was shown visiting her grave, although it was not acknowledged how she passed away.
He was heard romantically saying: “The best part of me died with you,” and he mentioned getting “vengeance.”
What fans thought
Fans weren’t on board with the show’s decision to not disclose what happened to Monica. One viewer wrote: “Ok why do we have to guess what happened to Monica or did I miss something. Obviously she died, but how, when and why?”
Another follower inquired: “I don’t remember Monica dying (Kayce’s wife). What did she die from?”
A third person continued: “My question is why was Monica buried on a mountain instead of with her baby [that] she lost and buried on the Dutton ranch?”
Fans’ previous opinions on Monica’s character
Although some viewers were flabbergasted by the unexpected twists, others have previously shared their candid thoughts on Monica’s status as a character overall.
In 2022, Yellowstone star Kevin Costner asked online: “What do you want to happen in season five,” and fans had a lot to say about Monica.
One person wrote: “Monica either stands by her man and quits [being] a spoiled brat that always wants her way…or she needs to be done off the show.”
Another follower added: “Monica has got to go! She’s making Tate a wimp and keeping him away from Yellowstone and his Grandpa.”
A third viewer commented: “Monica’s character is not that of a strong woman nor mother. She needs to be written off and her son needs to grow into a strong man.”
Another fan wrote: “Like others have said, I’d like to see Monica and Kayce get divorced, with Kayce getting Tate. Tate and Carter have interactions together.”
The new spinoff series focuses on Kayce joining a U.S. Marshals team, with the leader being his old friend Pete Calvin, who is played by Logan Marshall-Green.
Regardless of whether or not viewers like what happened to Monica on the new show, it brought more buzz about the series’ premiere online.
