Liv Tyler is the daughter of Playboy model Bebe Buell and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler

Who is Liv Tyler?

The Armageddon actress was born on 1 July 1977 in Portland, Maine. For the first 10 years of her life, Liv believed herself to be the daughter of Playboy model Bebe Buell and musician Todd Rundgren, but in fact her father turned out to be none other than Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. 

When Liv figured out the connection for herself, her mother admitted who her father was and the actress subsequently remarked: “So, I now have two fathers I am very happy with that.” She moved with mother Bebe to New York at 14 and quickly found success as a model.

Early career

After two years modelling in the Big Apple, Liv transitioned to a career in acting. She made her debut in Silent Fall (1994) and Heavy (1995) and guest starred in Aerosmith’s music videos for Crazy (1994) and Amazing (1993), per IMDBNot long after, she appeared in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty (1996) and cult classic Empire Records (1995).

Armageddon

Following her early success, Liv made a name for herself in Tom Hanks’ That Thing You Do! and joined action genre stalwart Bruce Willis in Armageddon (1998). Liv played Bruce’s on-screen daughter Grace Stamper and starred opposite Gone Girl’s Ben Affleck. The four-time Oscar nominated hit Armageddon follows a team of deep-core drillers who work to save the planet when scientists discover an asteroid the size of Texas is set to impact Earth. 

Liv has since reflected on her early career, saying: “If I seemed sweet and naive, that’s because I was sweet and naive. I was 16 when I started out. It wasn’t like I had a huge variety of options to pick from. I was just learning.”

Wider career

Just two years after co-starring with Bruce Willis, the actress left for New Zealand to shoot Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, starring opposite Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn as his elven love interest Arwen. The first instalment of the Tolkien trilogy arrived in cinemas in 2001, followed by sequels in 2002 and 2003.

Liv Tyler has been married twice and is a mother to three children

Personal life

Liv Tyler dated Joaquin Phoenix from 1995 to 1998 and shortly after their split, she met rockstar Royston Langdon. The pair got engaged in 2001 and secretly wed in Barbados in March 2003. Son Milo William Langdon was born in December the next year. They announced they were parting ways in 2008.

Following her split, Liv started dating sports and entertainment manager Dave Gardner in 2014. They got engaged the next July and share two children, son Sailor Gene and daughter Lula Rose. They separated after 7 years together in 2021.

What’s she up to now?

Liv’s more recent projects have included a 16 episode appearance on Harlots as Lady Isabella Fitzwilliam, Eve in Oscar-nominated sci-fi thriller Ad Astra and reappearing as Betty Ross in Captain America: Brave New World (2025).
