Netflix released one of its most gripping shows back in October, when it added Taiwanese revenge drama The Resurrected to its library.
The nine-part series follows two grieving mothers who lost their daughters to a human trafficking scheme. In a bid to avenge their children, the pair end up using a forbidden ritual in order to resurrect a criminal ringleader to exact their revenge against the perpetrators.
The synopsis reads: âThe Resurrected is a dark and suspenseful series that follows the journey of two desperate mothers as they resurrect a deceased ringleader of a telecommunication fraud scheme to avenge their kidnapped daughters.â
Upon its release, the show dominated in Asian markets, surging high in the charts in the likes of Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.
However, English audiences also became obsessed with the series, with some viewers admitting that they were staying up all night in order to binge-watching the nine-part drama, which was hailed as âunforgettableâ.
Fan reception to The Resurrected
In one review, a viewer enthused: âIt was honestly worth the watch. Iâm very particular about the things I watch. If itâs boring, I tend to turn it off and never finish it, but I binge watched this all in one night. Finished it at 7 am. I wonât give any spoilers, but it was very entertaining and did leave me with so many questions.â
A second commented: âThe writing is sharp, restrained, and confident-it doesnât over-explain and trusts the viewer to connect the dots. Every pause, glance, and line matters,â while a third shared: âThis drama has one of the freshest and most creative plots Iâve seen in years. The acting is absolutely fabulous â every performance feels genuine and powerful. The younger actors deserve special mention too; their performances are truly remarkable and add great depth to the story.â
A fourth penned: âForget what you know about revenge thrillers. The Taiwanese drama The Resurrected is a relentless, brilliant puzzle box that constantly redefines itself, making it one of the most intelligent and underrated series in recent memory.â
After watching just two episodes, ScreenRantâs Nick Bythrow concluded: âWith compelling, flawed lead characters and an interesting balance between realism and the fantastical, The Resurrected is a promising revenge series with a unique twist on the genre. Although the first two episodes are only the start of where the show is going, theyâre a very intriguing look into the seriesâ progression. With a promising start, this Taiwanese series seems like a perfect addition to Netflixâs international catalogue.â
