Colleen Hoover’s books are making another leap to the big screen, with an A-list cast.
The Amazon MGM Studios movie will tell the story of a struggling writer, Lowen (played by Dakota Johnson), on the verge of financial ruin, who lands a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to finish a successful series by best-selling thriller author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway).
However, when Lowen discovers an unfinished manuscript, she begins unraveling chilling secrets that could change everything.
Hathaway is reuniting with director Michael Showalter, whom she previously worked with for Prime Video’s The Idea of You. Following Hathaway’s casting announcement in November 2024, Hoover shared her excitement for Verity’s cast and crew on Instagram. (Johnson will also executive produce the movie.)
“@annehathaway as Verity! Michael Showalter directing! @amazonmgmstudios! Verity is coming to theaters and I am so excited for this cast and the script and the director and the whole team bringing this to life. Cannot wait. More coming soon!” she wrote.
From plot points to casting details, here’s everything to know about the Verity movie.
What is Verity about?
Hoover first self-published Verity in 2018 before it topped The New York Times best seller list for months, selling over 1 million copies in 2023 alone. The film’s synopsis reveals that, like Hoover’s novel, the movie will follow Lowen, a struggling writer who gets the “job offer of a lifetime.”
Jeremy Crawford, husband of best-selling thriller author, Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in his wife’s successful series after a “mysterious accident” has left her unable to finish.
However, upon arriving at the Crawford home, Lowen uncovers a secret manuscript that reveals unsettling details about the family’s past, leading her to question whether Verity’s writings are fiction or a chilling confession from a deranged mind. As she grows closer to Lowen’s husband and son, Crew, Lowen attempts to determine the truth — and grapples with how much of it she should share.
During an August 2024 appearance on Barely Famous, Hoover shared that, despite having over 20 best-selling novels, penning Verity was her “favorite writing experience.”
Who is in the cast of Verity?
In November 2024, Amazon MGM Studios announced that Hathaway would star as Verity Crawford in the adaptation of Hoover’s novel.
The author shared her enthusiasm about finalizing the casting process with The Hollywood Reporter during the premiere of It Ends With Us, the movie adaptation of another one of her books, in August 2024.
“Right now, they’re all just blurs in my head,” she said. “But I’m so excited that this one’s finally starting to take off.”
That same month, Hoover shared on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that she was sent an “entire list of people” and was “excited that it was being made.”
In December 2024, another big casting update was announced: Dakota Johnson joined the cast as Lowen, while Josh Hartnett is playing Jeremy, the late Verity’s husband.
Who is directing Verity?
Showalter, who has previously worked on 2021’s The Eyes of Tammy Faye and 2017’s The Big Sick, was announced as the director of Verity alongside the news of Hathaway’s casting.
This marks their second collaboration, as Showalter and Hathaway previously worked together earlier this year on The Idea of You, the film adaptation of Robinne Lee’s romance novel.
Nick Antosca wrote the current script, while prior writers include Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, Will Honley and April Maguire.
When did Verity start filming?
In late February 2025, Hathaway and Hartnett were spotted filming Verity in N.Y.C. They were photographed running down the street while wearing semi-formal attire and holding hands.
Days later, Johnson was spotted filming with Hartnett, splattered with fake blood all over her face and clothing. They seemed to be filming a scene from the book that involved a car accident.
When will Verity be released?
Verity will be released in theaters on May 15, 2026, as reported by multiple outlets including Variety.
In the meantime, fans can stream another one of Hoover’s book-to-movie adaptations, It Ends With Us, on Netflix, or Apple TV+ and Prime Video for purchase. There’s also another upcoming adaptation of Hoover’s book Regretting You on the way, which will start filming in 2025, per Deadline.
