Valerie Bertinelli is speaking out for the first time about her experience of being sexually abused when she was just 11 years old.
The âOne Day at a Timeâ alum, 65, opened up about the shocking incident in a new interview with People published Wednesday to promote her upcoming memoir, âGetting Naked.â
âItâs taken me 10 years at least,â Bertinelli told the outlet regarding her decision to come forward more than 50 years later. âThe very first time I said it out loud to my therapist, I thought âIâm going to feel better now.ââ
Although the âTouched by an Angelâ alum admitted that âit got worse before it got betterâ and she âmaybe ate a little bit moreâ and âdrank a little bit moreâ to distract herself, she ultimately decided to âdeal withâ her feelings.
âYou can deal with them or not. And I chose to deal with them,â she said. âI donât feel shame about it anymore. Iâm pissed off that it happened. Nobody deserves that.â
But Bertinelli also shared that she âhad no plans to revealâ she was sexually abused at the age of 11, and âGetting Nakedâ â which is out March 10 â was initially supposed to be a âbook about teaching people how to love themselves.â
âI guess because Iâm healing from it, itâs not so scary anymore,â she told People. âI can say it out loud. I was sexually assaulted. It doesnât feel like it owns me anymore.â
The Golden Globe winner also discussed why she âpurposelyâ opened the chapter of her book about her sexual assault with a picture of herself at 11.
âBecause that was the little girl that was sexually abused,â she explained. âAnd it boggles my mind that this little girl was taken advantage of that way.â
She added, âIt boggles my mind because itâs still happening ⊠and Iâm furious about it. And we need to start speaking up and saying, âEnough.ââ
Bertinelliâs reps did not immediately respond to Page Sixâs request for comment.
