The newest trailer for Toy Story 5 has been released, revealing a slew of familiar voices returning to the beloved franchise, along with some new additions, as Woody and the gang take on the world of technology. The trailer for the upcoming Pixar film, set for a June 19 release, debuted on Thursday with the promise of a reunion between Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), and Jessie (Joan Cusack).

This comes after Woody chose to leave his owner, Bonnie, hand over his sheriff badge to Jessie and travel the countryside helping lost toys find loving homes in Toy Story 4.

“The toys are back and this time, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang’s jobs are challenged when they come face-to-face with Lilypad, a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Will playtime ever be the same?”

The now-eight-year-old Bonnie becomes enamored with her new device, voiced by Greta Lee, causing Woody, Buzz and Jessie to team up and save playtime. “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything,” Woody admits in the trailer.

Toy Story 5 will feature several new characters, including potty training toy Smarty Pants (Conan O’Brien), a talking GPS hippo toy (Craig Robinson), camera toy Snappy (Shelby Rabara), and tech-fearing toy Dr. Nutcase (Matty Matheson).

Returning to our screens is John Ratzenberger as Hamm, Wallace Shawn as Rex, Blake Clark as Slinky Dog, Tony Hale as Forky, Melissa Villaseñor as Karen Beverly, Annie Potts as Bo Peep, and Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom.

The trailer showcased Woody’s major transformation

The biggest toy transformation belongs to Woody, who returns with a dashing red poncho and a large bald spot on the back of his head. Lilypad asks him if he’s an “old man toy” when she first encounters him, prompting Forky to chime in: “She thinks you’re old, because you’re bald, Woody.” Trixie (voiced by Kristen Schaal) quips: “Someone needs a brown marker.”

Toy Story is Pixar’s longest-running franchise and one of its most beloved, with its fourth instalment winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar in 2020 and surpassing $1 billion at the global box office. Toy Story 4‘s co-writer, Andrew Stanton, who also penned the first two instalments, has co-written the upcoming film and will serve as co-director alongside McKenna Harris.

“It’s been a hilarious and poignant journey exploring how our favorite team of legacy toys might respond to today’s world of technology,” the duo said in a statement. “Having the remarkably talented Greta Lee bring Lilypad to life – balancing a playfully antagonistic tone with humor and heart – has been incredible.”

Tim Allen, who has portrayed Buzz Lightyear since the first film in 1995, shared a snippet of what to expect in the highly-anticipated project.

“I can tell you that it’s a lot about Jessie,” he told WIVB. “Tom [Hanks] and I do – Woody and I – do realign. And there’s an unbelievable opening scene with Buzz Lightyears. I can give you that, but I can’t give you much more.”
