Toddlers & Tiaras alumna MaKenzie Myers is grown up and speaking out.
On April 10, Myers, now 19, posted a TikTok using a trending sound from when she appeared on Toddlers & Tiaras — the TLC series that ran from 2009 to 2013 and followed very young girls who competed on the pageant circuit. Myers appeared in multiple episodes of the series with her mom Juana.
In the audio clip taken from the series, Myers says, “Oh no, I can’t do that. I’m not doing that. I’m sorry.” When her mom is heard trying to negotiate with her, she says, “Oh my gosh. Leave me alone, people.” The sound was from an episode in which she got upset with her mom while changing costumes during a pageant.
Myers wrote over her video, “My exact reaction to waking up this morning to be tagged one million and one times in a comment section where everyone is talking about how bad a child I was. God forbid a girl have an opinion on what she wears at a young age.”
She added in the caption, “Leave me alone people.” The trending sound she used of herself has been used in more than 27,000 videos, according to TikTok.
It’s not the first time Myers has used her TikTok account to address her appearance on the show. In January, she posted a video and wrote, “ ‘You’re so funny.’ Thanks, my whole childhood was broadcasted on national television so much so that I couldn’t even throw a fit in peace & I thought the TLC camera crew was my friend & we were just chit chatting (they told all my secrets).”
In a video posted back in 2022, she wrote, “5 min get added to your life everytime someone asks, ‘are you MaKenzie from toddlers and tiaras?’ ” And in 2021, she posted a video she captioned, “When people think I still act the same as baby kenzie 10 years later,” alongside a snippet from Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well,” in which she sings, “And that made me want to die.”
According to Myers’ Instagram, she is currently a sophomore at Louisiana Christian University and plays on the softball team.
Other people who appeared on Toddlers & Tiaras include Alana ‘Honey Boo Boo’ Thompson, whose family starred in the spin-off Here Comes Honey Boo Boo, Eden Wood and Kailia Posey, who died by suicide in 2022.
Todders & Tiaras was highly controversial when it aired. Myers’ mother Juana spoke to PEOPLE in 2011 about why she put her daughter in pageants, beginning when she was 18 months old. “She was laughing onstage. She loved it, and she won!” Juana said, noting they began seriously competing when her daughter was 4.
“She transforms when she gets on stage,” she said. “The hair and makeup took hours. The whole thing was overwhelming. I thought, ‘What have I gotten us into?’ ” But she said, despite the “tantrums” her daughter had, after she won, “She kept asking, ‘Can we go back? Can we go back?’ ”
