TODAY’s Dylan Dreyer reveals most ‘unfair’ part of oldest son’s celiac battle in parenting confession

Dylan Dreyer is sharing some insight into creating a gluten-free household.

The TODAY meteorologist, 45, has spoken extensively about making her home completely devoid of gluten after her oldest son Calvin, nine, was diagnosed with celiac disease.

However, creating that balance hasn’t always been easy, especially with the dearth of options available to other parents wanting to do the same.

In a new example of such, Dylan took to her Instagram Stories to share one of the struggles of raising someone with celiac while gluten-free grocery shopping, which you can watch below…

“Why having celiac and being gluten free is so unfair!” she wrote alongside the clip.

Dylan shares her sons Calvin, Oliver and Rusty with ex-husband Brian Fichera. The mom-of-three went public with her son’s diagnosis in 2023, explaining then that the entire process was very new to her. “I knew nothing about celiac disease. I knew a friend of a friend had it, and she couldn’t eat bread. That’s basically the knowledge I had,” she told TODAY.com.

The diagnosis came about after seeing how much pain their son was experiencing, plus other symptoms like him being unable to eat certain foods, losing hair, dropping things, and a rash on his scalp.

Once they discovered what was wrong, they immediately switched to not only putting the entire household on a gluten-free diet, but even buying new kitchen equipment. “Not only is it not feeding him any wheat products but it’s also the cross-contamination risk,” she explained.

“All of my stuff in the kitchen had to be thrown out, all of our wooden spoons, wooden cutting boards, anything that had a scratch in it … any rivets on the inside of the pot where the handle is. All of that had to be thrown out because gluten can hide everywhere.”

While American grocery chains still have room to grow when it comes to accommodating for certain diets, speaking exclusively with HELLO! back in 2024, Dylan was full of praise for the UK’s grocery chains for being more celiac friendly.

“I think it would be an easy transition if I ever were to go out there and my life revolves around my kids and with Calvin having celiac disease,” she explained. “You know, it’s honestly all I think about, I mean, all I have to do is feed kids all day long and it’s hard to feed him sometimes.”

“I just want to say kudos to Waitrose and, you know, really so many of the grocery stores in the UK, because I mean celiac disease here in the United States… I don’t know if it’s not taken as seriously or what, but it’s like more of a nuisance in the United States and you have to kind of find places where you can, maybe get some stuff and it’s okay,” Dylan added.

“And it’s getting better, but to go into Waitrose and it’s just a basic gluten-free flour, it’s not made with anything, you know, expensive. The fact that I can order it on Amazon for $20, or I can buy it in Waitrose for £2, it was absolutely shocking. So all I did was fill up my suitcase with mostly flour.”
