Baylen Dupree is not your average 22-year-old.
PEOPLE can exclusively debut TLCâs brand new series, Baylen Out Loud, which follows the TikTokerâs life as she navigates a rare form of Tourette syndrome.
âBaylen Out Loud will inspire audiences as they watch Baylen push herself outside her comfort zone in pursuit of the independent life sheâs always dreamed of,â reads a synopsis for the show. âAfter years of feeling self-conscious about her condition, Baylen is finally ready to live freely, embracing her authentic self and showing the world that Tourette doesnât define her. With the support of her family and friends, Baylen is ready to stretch her wings.â
According to the Mayo Clinic, Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by rapid, repetitive and involuntary muscle movements or sounds (tics).
Tics can also range from mild to severe and, in some cases, they can be debilitating and lead to self injuries, per the Tourette Association of America. The frequency and severity of tics also change regularly, and can be in response to factors like stress, anxiety, excitement, fatigue, illness and more.
After she was officially diagnosed with the disorder at age 18, Baylen went on share her story with the internet and has since amassed almost 10 million TikTok followers.
In Baylen Out Loud, the 22-year-old gives fans an inside look at her life alongside her parents Allen and Julie, five siblings and her boyfriend Colin who provide her support, love and humor throughout her journey.
âMy name is Baylen ⊠and I have Tourette syndrome â and a little baby weenie,â Baylen says with a British accent in PEOPLEâs exclusive trailer.
âTourette syndrome causes me to have involuntary motor and vocal tics,â she continues, as scenes of her compulsions play on screen. After exclaiming phrases like âwind it up,â âyour momâs built like a falafelâ and âmy mom has crabs,â Baylen shares how her tics can affect her day-to-day life.
Though the internet personality faces unique struggles due to her diagnosis, her family is just like any other. She has âfour crazy, loud brothersâ and a sister she fights with over clothes.
âHaving a sister with Touretteâs is very crazy,â her sister Sammi tells cameras. âYou donât know if youâre going to get slapped in the face or get a hug.â
In addition to her family members, Baylen introduces her boyfriend Colin, who she describes as âmy medicine.â But given his âvery traditionalâ upbringing, Baylenâs Touretteâs sometimes causes awkward moments as one scene shows her blurting out that sheâs pregnant in front of his parents.
âIâm not,â she quickly clarifies, before grimacing to Colin, âIâm gonna hide underneath this pillow right here.â
As a young adult, the reality star also reveals that her ânumber one goal is to move out of my parents house.â Though her mom knows she wants âher independence,â she notes that itâs âan emotional dance.â
To make matters more intense, Colinâs admission about his position within the United States Air Force could derail everything. âIÂ have a relocation coming up. I could end up anywhere,â he says solemnly, before Baylen adds through her tears, âI donât want him to leave.â
The situation prompts Baylenâs family to be concerned. âDoes he want to drag her with him whenever he goes?â Sammi asks, adding, âPlane rides are already hard enough.â
In a scene of Baylen in the airport, her tics kick in and she yells âI have a gunâ in the middle of a TSA screening after seeing a sign about guns being prohibited.
âTheyâre gonna send us to a back room,â her mom bluntly states.
Baylenâs life only gets more complicated as she navigates this new dynamic and Colin has a private conversation with her parents. âBaylen has no idea that Iâm here right now, itâs hard to hold back the emotions,â he says.
As a result, Baylenâs dad warns Colin, âNothing better happen to my kid,â and her mom says through tears, âIâm entitled to my feelings too.â
Eventually things threaten to bubble over when her parents worry sheâs âgoing to over do herselfâ and she breaks into what appears to be a seizure in a following scene.
In a statement, Howard Lee, President of TLC and Discovery Networks, said Baylenâs authentic nature was what drew them to her story.
âBaylenâs realness and humor struck us right away,â Lee said. âHer fearless honesty about living with Tourette Syndrome not only busts stereotypes but also builds bridges of understanding. At TLC, we stay committed to showcasing stories that resonate deeply with our audience, and Baylenâs journey is the perfect blend of heart and mission.â
