1991 was a pivotal year for entertainment. Will Smith ruled the small screen with the hit NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, while Whitney Houston memorably sang “The Star-Spangled Banner“ at the Super Bowl XXV.

On the big screen, Arnold Schwarzenegger conquered the summer box office with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but there was another action flick that season that would go on to live in the hearts and minds of teenage boys everywhere.

On July 12, 1991, Kathryn Bigelow’s surfer bro classic Point Break was released in theaters worldwide. The film did reasonably well in its initial release, but it’s since gained a bigger following in the years since its release — and especially after one of its leading stars, Patrick Swayze, died in 2009.

Watch With Us are big fans of Point Break and want to celebrate the film’s recent 35th anniversary by letting everyone know why it’s such an enduring film, what its stars have said about it over the years and where you can watch it for free right now.

Hollywood may have embraced blockbusters in the ’90s, but it’s an underrated decade when it comes to movies. Some of the films made during the 1990s can easily be counted among the best movies ever made. However, the Watch With Us team feels that the Oscars only named the correct Best Picture winners three times […]

What Is ‘Point Break’ About?

Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) is a rookie FBI agent with something to prove. That’s why he eagerly accepts a dangerous mission: to find and infiltrate a dangerous bank robber gang in Los Angeles. After some investigating, he thinks he’s found them when he meets Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), a Zen-like surfer who wants to steal enough cash to fund his worldwide surfing trips.

Johnny is willing to do anything to bring Bodhi to justice, but the longer he’s near him, the more he likes him — and is drawn to the surfer bohemian lifestyle Bodhi swears by. As the robberies get more violent, Johnny has to make a choice: arrest Bodhi, or let him go and throw away everything he’s worked for.

Who Stars in ‘Point Break’?

Keanu Reeves plays the lead character, but Patrick Swayze gets top billing. That makes sense once you remember the actor was at his career peak thanks to box office hits Dirty Dancing and Ghost. Reeves was still a relative newbie, but he already impressed critics with his dramatic performances in River’s Edge and My Own Private Idaho.

The full cast list is below:

Patrick Swayze as Bodhi
Keanu Reeves as FBI Agent Johnny Utah
Gary Busey as FBI Agent Angelo Pappas
Lori Petty as Tyler Ann Endicott
John C. McGinley as FBI Director Ben Harp
James LeGros as Roach
John Philbin as Nathaniel
Bojesse Christopher as Grommet
Lee Tergesen as Rosie
Vincent Klyn as Lupton “Warchild” Pittman
Chris Pedersen as “Bunker” Weiss
Dave Olson as Archbold
Anthony Kiedis as Tone
Galyn Gorg as Margarita
Sydney Walsh as Miss Deer
Anthony Mangano as Off-Duty Cop at Bank
Mike Genovese as FBI Instructor Corey
Jack Kehler as FBI Technician Halsey
Christopher Pettiet as 15-Year-Old Kid at Surfboard Shop
Peter Phelps as Aussie Surfer
Tom Sizemore as DEA Agent Deets

And there’s no better deal in streaming right now than Pluto TV. The FAST channel platform just […]

What Have the Cast and Critics Said About ‘Point Break’?

Everyone involved with the making of Point Break speaks highly of the film, both as it was being made and how it’s been received by the public over the years. Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival, Reeves describes multiple encounters with fans who claim the film changed their lives. “All of the time I run into people who are like ‘Point Break is great. I started jumping out of planes … [and] surfing because of Point Break.’ It changed people’s lives, just like it changed mine.

Lori Petty, who plays Bodhi’s former girlfriend and Johnny’s love interest, Tyler, described the production to the news outlet UFI as harmonious and inclusive. “We were just like a team,” Petty said. “Nobody was waiting on anyone. Nobody was divalicious.”

She was also impressed with how Bigelow’s artistic vision elevated the film from a typical action picture into something different and memorable. “We were thrilled to be inside of that painting. Kathryn Bigelow’s a real artist. It just is stunning to look at because that’s her eye.”

Roger Ebert was one of the few critics at the time who praised Point Break, noting in his three-and-a-half star review that “Bigelow is an interesting director for this material. She is interested in the ways her characters live dangerously for philosophical reasons. They aren’t men of action, but men of thought who choose action as a way of expressing their beliefs. That adds an intriguing element to their characters, and makes the final confrontation in this movie as meaningful as it can be, given the admittedly preposterous nature of the material.”

Why ‘Point Break’ Is an Action Classic – and 1 of the Best Bromance Movies of All Time

As usual, Ebert pinpoints what makes Point Break an effective action film — and something deeper than the usual testosterone-filled spectacle. While it’s true the film has a ridiculous story, it commits to it. There’s no irony here, and Bigelow takes both of her leads seriously. Bohdi really does believe in a surfing paradise that’s just beyond his reach, and you sympathize with his illegal efforts to get there.

The ’90s were a great decade for cinema, as blockbusters coexisted with films from all genres while expanding the reach of movie theaters. It was good while it lasted, but the movies that made the decade worthwhile are still fun to watch over 30 years later. Watch With Us has selected five near-perfect 1990s movies […]

If Bohdi is less a villain and more of a complicated antagonist, Johnny, too, isn’t your standard action hero. He certainly starts like that, and the film pokes fun at his cookie-cutter appearance and all-American disposition. But by the end of the film, Johnny’s been transformed by his time with Bodhi. He believes less in the black-and-white viewpoint of his law-and-order profession and understands what drives Bodhi. Their bromance frees them to understand each other and themselves, allowing them to attain what they’ve always wanted.

On a more basic level, Point Break is just pure fun, with stunts that still make your jaw drop and great cinematography that really captures the salt air and sandy beaches of early ‘90s L.A. It’s one of the rare action flicks that appeals to the body and soul, which is why it’s lasted all this time and will continue to remain beloved and relevant for at least another 35 years.
