The White Lotus season 3 finale nearly saw Piper letting loose in an unexpected way.
Series creator, Mike White appeared on the latest episode of The White Lotus companion podcast and revealed one pivotal scene that ended up on the cutting room floor.
While opening up about Piper (Sarah Catherine Hook)’s relationship with her older brother Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), White, 54, said the season finale originally saw Piper lose her virginity.
“The part that was cut too, which is very disappointing, is that she decides to lose her virginity in the script in the last episode, and she actually has sex with Zion (Nicholas Duvernay), which is Belinda (Natasha Rothwell)’s son,” he revealed.
After Saxon accused her of being a virgin earlier in the series, White said of Piper’s mindset: “She’s like, ‘It’s true, Saxon’s right about this one thing, I need to get this over with.’ After she leaves the monastery, she’s just like, I need to like have sex.”
He added that the scene would have featured Piper “scoping [out] the restaurant” before setting her sights on Zion.
“It was just like one of these things where … it’s an hour and a half already, and it would have added like 10 minutes to the thing,” White continued. “It had a little bit of a romantic rom-com vibe in the middle of like [Timothy Ratliff (Jason Issacs)] trying to kill the family with the pong pong fruits.”
“It just felt like I was trying to do too much, narratively,” he said.
At a cast Q&A led by Tan France on Sunday, April 6, Hook broke down Piper’s complete 180 in the season 3 finale and joked that she wanted her character to let loose now that she’s abandoned her plans to study at a Buddhist temple.
Instead of pursuing her initial plans of going through a religious program, Piper revealed she hated her overnight stay at the temple and admitted she didn’t want to give up her privileged lifestyle.
“I’m like, ‘Oh god, she’s just a little rich girl.’ And that’s quite loaded and it’s so good,” she said of the moment she read Piper’s character flip. “I was like, ‘Wow. Everyone in this episode really came to some enlightenment.’ And she’s trying to get enlightened the whole time. And then she’s like, ‘No. I guess I’m spoiled.’ ”
“I love that. It’s so funny. It’s so good. I couldn’t be happier for her, really,” Hook continued, joking, “I’m ready for her to be a h– now. So let’s go. Make it happen. No, I’m kidding. I don’t know. I’m being a troll.”
