Do re mi fa so, where are they now?
Sixty years ago, the 1965 film The Sound of Music premiered, bursting Julie Andrews onto the scene and making everyone fall for Christopher Plummer. The movie was based on the 1959 musical of the same name by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which in turn was inspired by the 1949 memoir The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
Written by Maria von Trapp, the book told the incredible story of how she met the von Trapp family, how they managed to escape Nazi occupation during World War II and later became world-famous singers.
The Sound of Music earned 10 Oscar nominations, winning five, including major honors like Best Director and Best Picture. Plus, its soundtrack continues to be loved by millions.
Now, 60 years after singing “So Long, Farewell” together in 1965, the cast have moved on to other iconic roles and have grown their own families.
From winning Oscars to starring in sci-fi series, here’s where the cast of The Sound of Music are now.
Julie Andrews as Maria
Andrews starred as Maria, the precocious and inspirational governess who helps the von Trapp kids learn to embrace music and family — and later becomes their stepmother.
After Andrews earned her Oscar nomination for playing Maria, she continued having hit roles in movies like Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and Victor/Victoria (1982), the latter of which earned her another Oscar nomination for Best Actress.
These days Andrews is best known for her iconic roles as the queen in both The Princess Diaries and Shrek franchises. She also served as the voice for Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton and its spinoff Queen Charlotte from 2020 to 2024. Next up, fans might see Andrews reprise her role in The Princess Diaries since it was announced that a third film is in the works.
Off-screen, she was married to Breakfast at Tiffany’s director Blake Edwards from 1969 until his death in 2010. Andrews also has three daughters: Emma, Amy and Joanna.
Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp
Plummer played the von Trapp’s rigid patriarch. After The Sound of Music, he went on to have a long career both on Broadway and in Hollywood.
Plummer won Tony awards for his performances in the shows Cyrano (1974) and Barrymore (1997), and he earned three Oscar nominations — two for his roles in The Last Station (2009) and All the Money in the World (2017), and one for Beginners (2011), which he won.
Plummer died at age 91 in 2021. After his death, Andrews told the PA News, per BBC, “I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humour and fun we shared through the years.”
The actor was previously married to actress Tammy Grimes, with whom he shared a daughter, actress Amanda Plummer. From 1970 until his death, Plummer was married to actress Elaine Taylor.
Eleanor Parker as Baroness Schraeder
Eleanor Parker played Baroness Schreader, the new woman whom Captain von Trapp intends to marry.
Before starring in The Sound of Music, Parker had already earned three Oscar nominations for her roles in Caged (1951), Detective Story (1952) and Interrupted Melody (1958).
After The Sound of Music, Parker transitioned mainly into television, earning a Golden Globe nomination for the series Bracken’s World (1970) and later holding guest spots in a wide variety of shows like Hawaii Five-O (1978) and Murder, She Wrote (1986).
Parker was married four times during her life and had four children. The actress died in 2013 at age 91.
Charmian Carr as Liesl von Trapp
Charmian Carr played the von Trapp’s oldest daughter Liesel, who is in love with Rolf, a young man who later becomes a Nazi soldier.
The Sound of Music is actually one of Carr’s only acting credits. After the film, she appeared in one episode of ABC Stage 67 (1966) and then left acting behind to become an interior designer. Over the years, Carr wrote two books, Forever Liesl and Letters to Liesl, about her experience on the iconic movie set and appeared in 2010 with her costars to commemorate The Sound of Music‘s 45th anniversary.
The actress even recorded the song “Edelweiss” with the great-grandchildren of the von Trapps in 2014.
While growing her interior design business, Carr also grew her own family with her husband Jay Brent. The couple, who later divorced, had two daughters, Jennifer and Emily.
Carr died in 2016 at age 73. Her loved ones announced her passing on her website and wrote that she decided to leave show business behind “to focus on her two daughters.”
Nicholas Hammond as Friedrich von Trapp
Nicholas Hammond starred as Friedrich von Trapp, the oldest son of the von Trapp kids who tells Maria he’s “impossible.”
After The Sound of Music, Hammond became best known for starring as Peter Parker in the series The Amazing Spider-Man (1977-1979), as well as a set of made-for-TV Spider-Man movies.
After that, Hammond held roles in other projects like the 2004 miniseries adaptation of Salem’s Lot and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), in which he portrayed actor Sam Wanamaker. The lifelong actor isn’t done working on his craft, either. In early 2025, Hammond starred in the dramedy series Good Cop/Bad Cop.
As of 2011, Hammond was in a relationship with actress Robyn Nevin and the couple were living in Australia.
Heather Menzies-Urich as Louisa von Trapp
Heather Menzies-Urich starred as daughter Louisa von Trapp.
Aside from The Sound of Music, Menzies is best known for acting in the series Logan’s Run (1977-1978). She also held guest spots on shows like Vega$ (1979) and T.J. Hooker (1982). In 1973, Menzies appeared in Playboy.
The actress died in 2017 at age 68 and was survived by her three children, Ryan, Emily and Allison, per The Guardian. From 1975 until his death in 2002, Menzies was married to actor Robert Urich. After his passing, she devoted most of her time to a foundation she built in his honor.
Duane Chase as Kurt von Trapp
Duane Chase portrayed the youngest singing brother, Kurt von Trapp.
Chase has stayed out of the spotlight since starring in The Sound of Music, recording only two additional acting credits after the iconic movie. He told The Tuscaloosa News in 1981 that he quickly “became too old for young parts and too young for old parts.”
The former child actor graduated from high school in 1969 and worked for the forest service in California. Chase then studied geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and continued his education and work in the same field.
The geologist told Parade in 2013 that his interest in rocks was sparked while on location in Austria filming The Sound of Music. He said he often went off to explore the set’s surroundings even when he wasn’t supposed to.
As of 2013, Chase was married to a woman named Petra.
Angela Cartwright as Brigitta von Trapp
Angela Cartwright played Brigitta von Trapp in The Sound of the Music.
After the iconic movie, she continued landing lead roles, starring in the sci-fi series Lost in Space (1965-1968) and the 1979 Poseidon Adventure sequel, Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. Cartwright has since held cameos in both the 1998 Lost in Space movie and the 2018 series reboot. She also started a career in photography.
Cartwright married actor Steve Gullion in 1976 and their children Becca Gullion and Jesse Gullion have followed their footsteps into Hollywood. She is also the sister of horror icon Veronica Cartwright, who is best known for starring in Alien and The Witches of Eastwick.
Debbie Turner as Marta von Trapp
Debbie Turner played the second-youngest von Trapp sister, Marta.
The Sound of Music was her only major acting credit and she now runs a floral and wedding design company called Debbie Turner Originals. She also sells some memorabilia from the film.
As of 1989, Turner was married to Rick Larson, with whom she shared three daughters, Brooke, Amy and Angela.
Kym Karath as Gretl von Trapp

Karath also graduated from the University of Southern California and lived in Paris for a while, working as a model. In more recent years, she’s become an advocate for kids with disabilities because of her experience caring for her son.
“My son has special needs, so I was needed in a way I never expected to be needed,” Karath told Parade in 2013. “You just rise to the occasion.”
