An Oklahoma teen has been arrested in connection with the death of his adoptive mother.
On Friday, January 30, Jordan Cole Weems, 16, was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of desecration of a human corpse and one count of unauthorized removal of a dead body after allegedly admitting to killing his mother, Spring Weems, 49, with a âhammerâ that he found in their garage and then putting her body in a garbage can.
Police were first alerted to the situation when the father of one of Springâs biological kids â referred to as Levi or AW â reported that she had been missing to the Logan County Sheriffâs Office on Tuesday, January 27. (He and Spring had divorced some years ago, but continued to share custody of their minor children.) On Wednesday, January 28, authorities discovered her body in a trash bin that had been rolled to the curb in front of the home. Jordan was later taken into custody.
While investigating the case, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents spoke with one of Springâs adopted sons, who said he and Jordan had recently gotten into trouble for sneaking out at night and ârunning from law enforcement,â the affidavit read, per ABC affiliate KOCO News 5. The two boys had to write apology letters for their behavior and Jordan allegedly had his regular clothing and bedding taken away. Instead, he was reportedly made to wear an orange jumpsuit so he could learn âwhat life as a prisoner might be like if he did not start behaving.â He also ate âprison foods,â such as ham and beans or chicken and beans, according to the report.
Following the incident, Jordan allegedly made several threats to âkill their mother.â
After Spring went missing, the father of one of her biological children became concerned and decided to talk with one of the adopted kids â who has not been named publicly â because he was âacting like he knew something and was scared.â That was when the boy allegedly told him Jordan had âkilled Spring with a hammer and she was in a trash can at the street.â
Since his arrest, the Logan County District Attorneyâs Office has filed a motion requesting Jordan be denied bond. Lawyers argued Springâs death was ânot a crime of passion or an instantaneous decision. Rather, the Defendant [threatened] to kill his mother leading up to the crime.â
âHe planned the killing by retrieving a hammer and laying in wait to surprise his mother in the middle of the night,â DA officials continued in the court documents, referring to the reports that Jordan had allegedly stood in a hallway and waited for Spring to come out of the kitchen. âWhen his mother came upon him unsuspecting, he attacked her viciously and brutally.â
While Jordan has been charged as an adult, the DA officials suggested he would be âbetter cared for and servedâ if he was housed in a juvenile detention facility.
The 16-year-oldâs next court hearing is scheduled for February 24.
