Sydney Sweeney felt uneasy trying to guess a popular internet trend.
Sweeney, 28, made an appearance on the Monday, December 1, episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The Housemaid actress participated in the game “What’s Behind Me,” where Fallon, 51, gave her clues to the scene in the background.
As Sweeney faced away from the screen, the audience saw three giant Labubu dolls doing the “six seven” trend while standing in a McDonald’s drive-thru.
“This is unbelievably great,” Fallon teased as he prepared for the game. “Alright, they’re three of the hottest dolls right now that are attached to purses.”
Sweeney knew instantly that Fallon was referring to Labubus, so the late night host moved on to the toys’ location in the scene.
“They’re at a fast food [place] where you take your car to get fast food even faster,” Fallon said, and Sweeney correctly answered, “a drive-thru.”
Fallon then described the fast food brand as a “Scottish hamburger place,” which confused Sweeney. Fallon pivoted to describe the restaurant’s mascot Ronald McDonald.
“Sorry, sorry! It has a clown. A clown as a mascot,” Fallon shared which helped Sweeney realize it was McDonald’s.
However, when Fallon described how the Labubus were performing the viral hand gesture from the numeral Internet trend, Sweeney got nervous about saying “six seven” out loud.
“I can’t say that!” she declared.
Fallon seemingly thought she was referring to the number 69, which is slang for a sexual act.
“No, no! You can say it,” he said while fighting back laughter. “Subtract two! Subtract two, I think, from what you’re saying.”
While Sweeney understood what Fallon was referring to, she clarified she felt like she couldn’t say “six seven.”
“No I can’t say that, that’s the trend!” she said and Fallon shared it was a “number” that’s “not 66” or “68.” Sweeney finally caved, “I know it’s 67.”
Fallon cheered Sweeney for getting it right and reiterated it was OK for her to say it and it wasn’t a “dirty” phrase. Sweeney shared that she saw a video about people getting in “trouble” for saying “six seven” so that’s why she was being cautious.
“I don’t know! I saw that people were getting in trouble for doing it,” she said.
The clip from the episode was shared online and many users were confused why Sweeney thought “six seven” was a bad thing.
“She has great ‘jeans’ but won’t say 6-7???” one person commented on the Tonight Show’s Instagram referring to Sweeney’s controversial collaboration with American Eagle earlier this year.
Another replied, “So she draws the line at 67? Right right 💀.”
Sweeney had had her fair share of controversies this past year. Over the summer, she received backlash for her American Eagle ad, which used a play on words with “jeans” and “genes.” The tag line was “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” After the ad mentioned genetic traits, the internet thought it was promoting the discredited theory of eugenics.
In August, American Eagle released a statement following the backlash, “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. We’ll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone.”
Three months later, Sweeney addressed the scandal after publicly sharing she would not discuss it while promoting her movie Christy.
“I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans,” Sweeney later told GQ. “I knew at the end of the day what that ad was for, and it was great jeans, it didn’t affect me one way or the other.”
Sweeney added that she was busy filming Euphoria season 3, so she wasn’t looking at the online commentary.
“I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” she said.
