Sophie Ellis-Bextor has responded to criticism of her BBC New Yearâs Eve Disco special, which divided viewers on social media. The Murder on the Dancefloor singer addressed the backlash in an Instagram post, expressing pride in hosting the festive show.
The 45-year-old singer performed a medley of her greatest hits, including Take Me Home and Groovejet, as part of the BBCâs New Yearâs Eve Spectacular. She was joined by guest stars Jessie Ware, Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, and rising band The Last Dinner Party.
Social media reaction
While many praised the show as âworld classâ and âan absolute treat,â some viewers were less impressed. Critics described the performance as âbreathlessâ and likened it to âkaraoke night.â
One viewer posted on X (formerly Twitter): âSophie Ellis-Bextor canât even keep up with her own songs. Just lip-sync and nail the stage presence â this is cringe!â Another added: âThis performance wouldnât be out of place in a local pub on karaoke night.â
Others were quick to defend Ellis-Bextor, with one fan writing: âSophie Ellis-Bextor was world class. What a party! The BBC smashed it again.â Another said: âWow, Sophie is belting out bangers and clearly having the time of her life.â
Sophie addresses the backlash
Ellis-Bextor took to Instagram to share her thoughts on the mixed reactions. She posted a behind-the-scenes photo from the show and wrote: âSo, so proud and happy that I got to host a NYE disco on @bbc1. What an absolute privilege â I know New Yearâs Eve is a special night.â
She thanked her band, her stylist Victoria Jayneadcock, and director Liz Clare, adding: âIâve seen many a new year in with the BBC as Big Ben chimes, so I really see it as the biggest honour my band and I got to ring in 2025 with whoever was watching.â
Ellis-Bextor also praised her production team and described the experience as âreally special.â
A busy new yearâs eve
The BBC special was pre-recorded as Ellis-Bextor had another commitment on New Yearâs Eve. She performed live at Times Square in New York as part of the cityâs iconic celebrations.
A successful year
The performance capped off a remarkable year for the singer. In 2024, Ellis-Bextor embarked on sold-out tours across Europe, the United States, and Australia.
She also performed at numerous festivals, including Glastonbury, where she joined DJ Peggy Gou for a standout set.
Jake Shears, who appeared on the BBC special, commented on her Instagram post: âThanks for having me, I had the best time!â
