Kody Brown was married to four women at the same time, but when it comes to his kids, he firmly believes in chastity.
“I say to these young men, almost always your job is to protect my daughter, even from yourself,” Kody said during the Sunday, October 26, episode of Sister Wives after meeting 23-year-old daughter Aurora’s new boyfriend, Brodie Utley, for the first time.
Kody, 56, revealed that from his perspective, “When you’re just dating, you’re kissing another man’s wife until she’s your wife. And if she doesn’t become your wife, you’re kissing another man’s wife.”
The father of 18 further explained, “This is the reason that I believe in chastity … don’t take something away from them that doesn’t belong to you.”
During the episode, Kody grilled Brodie over his ability to watch over Aurora, whom he had been dating for just a few months. (Brodie and Aurora celebrated one year of dating in September, according to social media.)
“If you love my daughter, then you’ll love her as much as I loved her mother, and I kept my hands off of her till we were married,” Kody claimed during a confessional, referring to fourth wife Robyn Brown, who is Aurora’s mom.
Robyn shares Aurora, Dayton, 25, and Breanna, 21, with her first husband. She also shares son Solomon, 13, and daughter Ariella, 9, with Kody, whom she legally wed in 2014 after becoming spiritually united four years prior. After Robyn and Kody got legally married, he adopted her eldest children.
Kody told the cameras on Sunday’s episode, “When we were older, I had an outlet. I [was] still loving [on] my wives, but we didn’t have a real physical connection until we were married.” (He was married to Meri Brown, Janelle Brown and Christine Brown when he began courting Robyn, 47.)
Aurora, meanwhile, continued to decorate the family Christmas tree as her boyfriend was interrogated by her dad.
“I just think it’s funny because after a while it’s clear that my dad’s talking about chastity, kind of,” Aurora said. “And I can tell that Brodie’s very much thinking about tactics. ‘I know how to use knives. I’m trained in mixed martial arts. She’s good, sir.’”
Kody proceeded to tell Brodie that the “best kind of relationship” is one where if you break up you can “still be friends” because you didn’t cross the intimacy line.
“I feel like I’m more discriminating now than I was with [Mykelti’s husband] Tony. Than I was with [Aspyn’s husband] Mitch, and than I was with [Maddie’s husband] Caleb,” Kody confessed. “I just was less discriminating. Now it’s a totally different story. I’ve gone through three divorces.”
Kody added that when his eldest daughters got married, he was in a different headspace. He shares Mykelti, 29, and Aspyn, 30, with Christine, as well as four other kids, and shares Maddie, 29, with Janelle, who mothered six of his kids.
After splitting from Christine, 53, Janelle, 56, and Meri, 54, in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively, he has become more critical of who comes into his kids’ lives.
“The problem was in the culture I came from, if at 22 I’m going steady with somebody, it’s because we’re going to get married,” Kody recalled. “Just every experience that I had was like, I knew within a few days, maybe a few weeks of dating that it was good or not. And then later on in my life, 25, 30 years later, I was like, ‘Oh, that wasn’t a good idea.’”
