Luther fans, listen up! A sequel to the 2023 film, Luther: The Fallen Sun, is coming to Netflix and some familiar faces are set to join leading man Idris Elba in the upcoming feature.

Fans of the crime thriller will undoubtedly be counting down the days until the film’s release. This gritty and intense crime thriller, which consistently drew millions of viewers during its run on the BBC, is hugely popular thanks to its unique take on the crime thriller genre, as well as leading star Idris’s commanding performance as the tortured John Luther.

The original series, which stars Idris Elba as detective John Luther, ran for five seasons from 2010 to 2019, and was lauded by critics. In the 2023 Netflix film, which received two and three star reviews, Luther broke out of prison to finally hunt down serial killer David Robey (Andy Serkis).

What to expect from the new Luther film

The new film follows Luther as he’s secretly called back into service following a series of puzzling murders in London.

The official synopsis reads: “When a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders hits London, Luther is secretly called back into service. But how can he save London when everyone on all sides seems to want him dead?”

Writer Neil Cross said of the upcoming film: “Luther, Alice, and Schenk are more than characters to me — they’re family.

“I never stop wondering where they are, what’s become of them … and what horrors might be stirring in the shadows of London while Luther’s not around. So we decided to get together and find out what happens next,” he told Tudum.

Meanwhile, director Jamie Payne described Neil’s story as a “wonderfully dark tale,” adding: “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland with the supreme talents that are Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley.”

Idris Elba will, of course, reprise his role as the titular detective. He will reunite with Ruth Wilson (The Affair, His Dark Materials), who did not appear in the 2023 film. The actress will reprise her role as Luther’s murderous sidekick, Alice Morgan.
