Scott Mills was earning a staggering amount on the BBC airwaves before being sacked over personal conduct allegations this week. Even before he took over the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show in January 2025, the radio presenter, who spent nearly three decades at the BBC, was among the station’s highest paid stars.

An annual report published by the BBC revealed Scott’s salary for the 2024-2025 period was between £355,000 and £359,999. This amount included the star’s first few months taking over the breakfast show as Zoe Ball’s replacement. Scott was ranked as the 11th highest-earning star overall on the station behind Zoe, who was the second highest-earning talent over those 12 months with a huge salary of £515,000 to £519,999.

Other stars in the top ten included Vernon Kay, who is the bookies’ favourite to replace Scott on Radio 2, Fiona Bruce, Greg James, Alan Shearer and, in top place, former Match of the Day host Gary Lineker. Gary departed the BBC in May 2025 following controversy over an antisemitic social media post, which he publicly apologised for.

The BBC sacks Scott

The BBC announced on Monday that Scott had been sacked following allegations regarding his personal conduct.

In a statement, the BBC said: “While we do not comment on matters relating to individuals, we can confirm Scott Mills is no longer contracted and has left the BBC.” The Mirror later claimed the sacking related to allegations about a “historic relationship” from more than ten years ago.

In an internal email the BBC shared with HELLO!, director of music, Lorna Clarke, wrote: “I wanted to personally let you know that Scott Mills has left the Breakfast show, and the BBC. I know that this news will be sudden and unexpected and therefore must come as a shock.”

She added: “I will update everyone with more information on plans for the show when I’m able to.”

It has since been reported that the former BBC star was previously questioned over sexual assault allegations in July 2018 after a police investigation began in 2016. The case was dropped in 2019 due to insufficient evidence.

Scott’s Radio 2 show

Scott was at the BBC for 25 years, starting out on Radio 1 in the late ’90s. He hosted his eponymous The Scott Mills Show from 2004 to 2022.

In December 2024, Zoe announced she was leaving the Radio 2 breakfast show after almost six years on the air. Scott already had a big year in the lead-up to taking over the breakfast show slot, tying the knot with his long-term partner Sam Vaughan in July 2024.

He went on to host the Radio 2 show for over a year before his final show on Tuesday 24 March.
