Savannah Guthrie believes she is to blame for her mother, Nancy Guthrie, being kidnapped in February.
During her first TV interview since the 84-year-old went missing last month, Savannah sobbed as she talked about the reality of realizing that her fame may have had something to do with the tragic crime.
âMy siblings are so amazing â my brother [Camron Guthrie], he spent his career in the military and worked in intelligence and is a fighter pilot and is brilliant and he saw very clearly right away what this was and even on the phone, when we called him, he knew and he said, âI think sheâs been kidnapped for ransom,â and I said, âWhat?!ââ Savannah, 54, recalled to Hoda Kotb during her âTodayâ interview.
âLike, how dumb could I be? I didnât want to believe it but do you think because of me?â And he said, âIâm sorry, sweetie, but yeah, maybe,ââ she shared.
âBut I knew that â I hope not, we still donât know. We donât know anything, so I donât know that itâs because sheâs my mom and somebody thought, âOh, that lady has money, we can make a quick buck,â that would make sense but we donât know.â
Savannah said the thought of it being her fault was âtoo much to bear.â
âThat itâs because of me and I just want to say, Iâm so sorry, mommy,â she said.
âIâm so sorry. Iâm sorry to my sister [Annie Guthrie] and my brother, and my kids and my nephew and Tommy, my brother-in-law, Iâm so sorry, Iâm so sorry if itâs me, Iâm so sorry. Iâm so sorry.â
Elsewhere in the interview, Savannah recalled the moment she found out her mom had gone missing.
âMy sister called me and I said, âIs everything OK?â And she said, âNo.â She said, âMomâs missing,ââ the journalist explained.
âAnd I said, âWhat? What are you talking about?â She said, âSheâs gone,ââ Savannah remembered.
Savannah said she and her sister were both âin a panicâ mode.
âWe thought that she must have had some kind of medical episode in the night and that somehow the paramedics had come because the back doors were propped open and that didnât make any sense,â she shared.
âWe thought maybe they came and there was a stretcher and they took her out the back,â Savannah continued. âBut her phone was there, her purse was there and all her things.â
Nancy was first reported missing from her Tucson, Ariz., home on Feb. 1.
During the investigation into her disappearance, authorities found a trail of blood on Nancyâs front porch.
Last month, the FBI released horrifying home security camera photos of an armed and masked person outside of Nancyâs door the night she disappeared.
In the videos and photos, the man stood on Nancyâs front porch, wearing gloves, as he tampered with her door camera.
Several people were detained amid this investigation, but they were not charged for Nancyâs disappearance after they were proven not to be involved. Savannah and her relatives were also cleared of any wrongdoing.
Last month, Savannah revealed that she and her family accepted that Nancy may be dead, as they offered $1 million for her âmiracleâ return.
