Rumer Willis is clarifying rumors that she lives off A-list parents Bruce Willis and Demi Moore.
“Just had to clarify since it seems there are quite a few uninformed and rude people in my comments on this post,” Rumer, 37, wrote via Instagram Stories on Monday, February 16, alongside a link to her recent in-feed video about being a single mom. “I work four different jobs to provide for my daughter. I am the sole provider for her.”
She continued, “I don’t live off a trust fund or get money from my parents. Most of the time I don’t have help with her. So how about y’all pause before you judge and assume.”
Rumer shares 2-year-old daughter Louetta with ex Derek Thomas, whom she was in a relationship with from 2020 to 2024.
The actress’ social media clapback came after a separate Instagram Story post on Monday in which Rumer broke down her duties as a single mother.
“Single Moms Be Like,” text on a video of Rumer holding several items read. She included words like: laundry, meal prepping, bath time, songwriting, journaling, guitar practice, working out, play dates, hanging out with friends, planning afterschool activities, sleep, drinking 64 oz of water, dating, filming content and taking dogs for a walk as her list of daily activities.
On Monday, Rumer also shared one of the hate comments she received in response to her initial video.
The social media user claimed that Rumer’s family would never “allow” her to “fall into serious debt,” which is different from other single mothers who have “added stress” of having to pay bills each month.
“I want to respond to this with care, because I think there’s a misunderstanding about what I was actually saying,” she wrote. “I am very aware that I have privileges in my life that many people don’t, and I don’t take that for granted.”
She added, “I know there are realities I will never fully experience, and I respect that. But this particular post wasn’t about privilege or comparing circumstances, and it feels like people are assuming I was ignoring that when that wasn’t the conversation I was trying to have.”
Rumer explained that she doesn’t act as if her family’s support is a “backup plan” for her life.
“I take a lot of pride in providing for myself and for my daughter, and I’ve carried real financial stress and responsibility,” she added. “There were years where I was the sole provider for multiple people, navigating pregnancy, inconsistent work, and the uncertainty that comes with that. So the idea that I don’t work or don’t understand financial pressure isn’t accurate.”
As her lengthy explanation continued, Rumer noted that two things can be true.
“People’s lives look different, and none of our experiences exist in a vacuum,” she wrote.” Just like someone with a stable job and housing might still struggle in ways that are real to them, even if their situation is different from someone facing much more severe hardship elsewhere in the world, we all move through different layers of reality. Acknowledging that difference doesn’t mean we can’t also talk about what we share.”
Rumer concluded, “My intention with that post was to speak to common ground and shared experience, not to erase differences or deny reality. I think there’s room for both compassion for what others face and honesty about our own lives without it becoming a competition.”
Rumer is one of three daughters whom Demi and Bruce welcomed during their marriage from 1987 to 2000. Bruce, who also shares daughters Mabel and Evelyn with wife Emma Heming Willis, is currently battling frontotemporal dementia.
