Marty Supreme already boasts an impressive cast — but director Josh Safdie revealed Robert Pattinson was secretly involved in the sports comedy film, too.
“No one knows this, but that voice — the commentator, the umpire — is Pattinson,” Safdie, 41, said at London’s BFI Southbank on Tuesday, January 13. “It’s like a little Easter egg. Nobody knows about that. … He came and watched some stuff and I was like, I don’t know any British people. So he’s the umpire.”
Naturally, fans of Pattinson ran to social media to share clips from the scene in question, which features Timothée Chalamet’s Marty Mauser playing a ping-pong match with Bela Kletzki (Géza Röhrig) at the British Open semifinals. While Marty dominates the match, he secretly makes a pact with Bela to “have a little fun,” showing off some impressive tricks before scoring the game-winning point. An animated Pattinson can be heard enthusiastically calling the game in the background.
“Honestly surprised no one caught this. Now that I know it’s him you can really hear it lol,” one person commented underneath the clip via X.
“Now that I know it’s him… it’s him lol,” a second person wrote, while a third said, “Dude I thought I was going crazy because I could’ve sworn I’d heard that voice before.”
Pattison, 39, and Safdie previously collaborated on the 2017 crime thriller Good Time. The Twilight actor is set to team up with Chalamet, 30, once more in Dune: Part Three, due out in theaters later this year.
After months of speculation, Pattinson confirmed his Dune casting in November 2025, while opening up about his busy schedule in a joint interview with his Die My Love costar Jennifer Lawrence.
“It’s actually really nice. When I was doing Dune it was so hot in the desert that I just couldn’t question anything,” he told IndieWire of the filming conditions at the time. “And it was so relaxing, like my brain actually wasn’t operating, I did not have a single functioning brain cell. And I was just listening to [director Denis Villeneuve]: ‘Whatever you want!’”
Chalamet, for his part, has been victorious this awards season for Marty Supreme, earning both the Best Actor award at the recent Critics Choice Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. He gave a shout-out to his girlfriend of three years, Kylie Jenner, during his acceptance speeches at both ceremonies.
“My dad instilled in me a spirit of gratitude growing up,” Chalamet said on stage at the Golden Globes on Sunday, January 11. “Always be grateful for what you have. It’s allowed me to leave this ceremony in the past empty-handed, my head held high, grateful just to be here. I’d be lying if I didn’t say those moments didn’t make this moment that much sweeter. For my parents, for my partner, I love you. Thank you so much.”
Elsewhere in his speech, Chalamet thanked Safdie and his Marty Supreme costars.
“Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart,” he said. “I’m in a category with many greats. This category is stacked. I look up to all you. Thank you. To Josh Safdie, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for this role, thank you for believing in me, thank you for this portrait, for your mind, for your worldview. To A24, Ronnie Bronstein, who cowrote the script with Josh, the amazing cast of this film, Odessa A’zion, Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, The Creator, Fran Drescher, Kevin O’Leary.”
