Robert Pattinson is weighing in on years of comments from horror movie fans who say the Twilight franchise “ruined” the vampire genre.

In an interview with GQ Spain, as translated by Variety, the 38-year-old actor said, “I love that people keep telling me, ‘Man, Twilight ruined the vampire genre.’ Are you still stuck on that s—? How can you be sad about something that happened almost 20 years ago? It’s crazy.”

Pattison shot to superstardom as vampire Edward Cullen opposite Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan in the series, the first installment of which came out in 2008.

In the years since it debuted, Pattinson has spoken candidly about the films that defined his early career, at one point saying, “The people who don’t like it are generally people who haven’t seen it, and they’re like all judgmental and stuff, and cynical people. But I think I am a judgmental and cynical person who would just mindlessly hate it without ever having seen anything.”

Pattinson has also expressed confusion at the film and book series’ popularity, saying in a 2019 Variety Actors on Actors interview with Jennifer Lopez, “I mean, it’s a weird story, Twilight. It’s strange how people responded.”

Well not eat her, drink her blood, whatever.”

He continued: “I thought there were definitely bits that were very romantic. But to me, I thought it was a pretty weird story. and even when I was promoting it, I was pretty open about how strange I thought it was when I was doing it.”

Pattinson has also opened up about his attitude while making the first film, saying in an interview with GQ that he wanted to make it as “arty as possible,” despite the studio’s opposing views.

His attitude was such that it even lead to a sit-down from his team, who told him,” ‘Okay, so whatever you’re doing right now, after lunch just do the opposite, or you’ll be fired by the end of the day,’ ” Pattinson told the outlet.
