âI used to always have shame,â explained Rihanna. âI actually donât like listening to my music, but AntiâI can listen to the album.â
The Grammy winner detailed, âItâs not me singing it, if Iâm just listening to it. Thatâs the one album that I can have an out-of-body experience where itâs not like ⊠You know when you hear your voice in a voicemail, and itâs like, âUgh.ââ
Anti came out in January 2016 and featured collaborations with Drake and SZA. The album received six nominations at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
Rihanna told the outlet Anti is inspiring the direction of her long-awaited ninth studio album. âI think music is my freedom. I just came to that realization. I just cracked the code on what I really want to do for my next body of work,â she said.
The âBitch Better Have My Moneyâ performer teased the upcoming album has âno genreâ at the moment before explaining why sheâs âwaitedâ so long to share new music with fans.
âEvery time, I was just like, âNo, itâs not me. Itâs not right. Itâs not matching my growth. Itâs not matching my evolution. I canât do this. I canât stand by this. I canât perform this for a year on tour,'â said Rihanna.
She continued, âAfter a while, I looked at it, and I was like, this much time away from music needs to count for the next thing everyone hears. It has to count. It has to matter. I have to show them the worth in the wait.â
âI cannot put up anything mediocre,â declared Rihanna. âAfter waiting eight years, you might as well just wait some more.â
