Quincy Jones was a man of many words.
The music industry titan, who died on Nov. 3, 2024 at 91, worked with everyone from Judy Garland to Michael Jackson and later in life had lots to say about his time with some of the biggest names in Hollywood.
From who he âwouldnât work withâ to what he said when he met Pope John Paul II in 1999, here are some of the most shocking revelations Jones made about all the famous faces he brushed shoulders with over the years.
Quincy Jonesâ Candid Thoughts on Pope John Paulâs Shoes
In a 2018 sitdown with GQ, Jones discussed a 1999 visit he made to the Vatican with his friend Bono where the two met Pope John Paul II.
âAll the guys in the Vatican had these Vatican black shoes,â Jones told the magazine, sharing that the Pope did not.
âHe had on some burgundy wingtips, man, with thin tan rib socks, man. We had to go and kiss his hand before we left. And when I kissed his hand, I looked down and saw those shoes and it just fell out of my mouth,â he recalled. âI said, âOh, my manâs got some pimp shoes on.â And he heard me.â
Why Quincy Jones âWouldnât Work Withâ Elvis
While Elvis Presley is known to many as âThe Kingâ â Jones was not a fan.
In 2021, he told The Hollywood Reporter that despite working with many of the biggest names in music history, he âwouldnât work withâ Presley.
âI was writing for [orchestra leader] Tommy Dorsey, oh God, back then in the â50s. And Elvis came in, and Tommy said, âI donât want to play with him.â He was a racist mother â Iâm going to shut up now,â he said before adding, âevery time I saw Elvis, he was being coached by Otis Blackwell, telling him how to sing.â (THR noted that Blackwell previously said heâd never met Presley.)
When previously talking about Presley to GQ, Quincy bluntly stated: âmââââ couldnât sing.â
Quincy Jones Calls Michael Jackson âGreedyâ
As part of an interview filled with an array of revealing stories, Jones told Vulture in 2018 that Michael Jackson, who he worked with on Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad, stole some of his music.
âI hate to get into this publicly, but Michael stole a lot of stuff. He stole a lot of songs,â he said, citing the similarities of âBillie Jeanâ to Donna Summerâs âState of Independence.â
The producer added, âHe was as Machiavellian as they come. Greedy, man. Greedy.â
âGreedy, man. Greedy. âDonât Stop âTil You Get Enoughâ â Greg Phillinganes wrote the c section. Michael shouldâve given him 10 percent of the song. Wouldnât do it,â he added.
Years later in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, Jones was asked about his early recollections of Jackson â whom he met when Jackson was just 12 years old.
âHe knew how to do his homework, whether it was with Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly or whoever, James Brown,â he said of how he was on the set of The Wiz. âHe was doing some Elvis copying, too. âThe King of Pop,â man. Come on!â
Quincy Jonesâ Thoughts on The Beatlesâ Talent
Jones didnât hold back when asked about his first impression of arguably the worldâs most popular band, calling them âno-playing mââââ.â
âPaul was the worst bass player I ever heard. And Ringo? Donât even talk about it,â he said. âI remember once we were in the studio with George Martin, and Ringo had taken three hours for a four-bar thing he was trying to fix on a song. He couldnât get it.â
Jones recalled telling Starr to take a break and calling jazz drummer Ronnie Verrell to sub in.
âRonnie came in for 15 minutes and tore it up,â he shared. âRingo comes back and says, âGeorge, can you play it back for me one more time?â So George did, and Ringo says, âThat didnât sound so bad.â And I said, âYeah, mââââ because it ainât you.â Great guy, though.â
Quincy Jonesâ Claims About Marlon Brandoâs Sex Life
Jones was first to allege that the duo had a sexual relationship, claiming that Brando would âfâ anything. Anything! Heâd fâ a mailbox. James Baldwin. Richard Pryor. Marvin Gaye.â
Later, Pryorâs widow Jennifer confirmed the rumor, telling TMZ that her late husband was always open about his bisexuality with friends and would not be ashamed that the relationship was revealed publicly.
Pryorâs daughter Rain Pryor and Brandoâs son Miko Brando both disputed the claims.
Quincy Jones Says He âKnowsâ Who Killed JFK
When asked during his talk with Vulture if there was anything he wish he didnât know, Jones said â who killed Kennedy.â
The music industry icon went on to allege that mobster Sam Giancana was behind the 1963 assassination.
âThe connection was there between Sinatra and the Mafia and Kennedy,â he said. âJoe Kennedy â he was a bad man â he came to Frank to have him talk to Giancana about getting votes.â
Jones then stated, âWe shouldnât talk about this publicly.â
Quincy Jones Shares a Memory of Working with Judy Garland
Jones once recalled a cheeky interaction he witnessed of Judy Garland when working with her at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1961.
âWe were playing the evening show with Duke Ellington, and she came out and the wind was in the mic, so Phil Ramone, the engineer, came out and put a condom on the microphone â to keep the wind away,â he told THR. âAnd when Judy came out, she did like this.â [Writer Seth Abramovitch described a motion like performing oral sex.]
âI never let her forget it,â Jones added.
Cyndi Lauper Was Difficult to Work with on âWe Are the Worldâ
In his 2018 interview with Vulture, Jones was asked about an anecdote in his memoir about some of the rockstars asked to be included in âWe Are the Worldâ complaining about the song. Jones shared that it was one star in particular who appeared to have an issue with the tune.
âIt wasnât the rockers,â he explained. âIt was Cyndi Lauper. She had a manager come over to me and say, âThe rockers donât like the song.â I know how that sâ works. We went to see Springsteen, Hall & Oates, Billy Joel, and all those cats and they said, âWe love the song.â So I said [to Lauper], âOkay, you can just get your sâ over with and leave.â And she was fââ up every take because her necklace or bracelet was rattling in the microphone. It was just her that had a problem.â
Quincy Jones Says He Once âDatedâ Ivanka Trump
After calling his former acquaintance Donald Trump a âmegalomaniac, narcissisticâ and âcrazy mâââââ Jones added as an aside, âI used to date Ivanka, you know.â
âWait, really?,â Vultureâs David Marchese asked.
Jones went on to claim that he and Ivanka dated 12 years ago â when they would have been 72 and 24 respectively â after she asked Tommy Hilfiger to set up a dinner for them.
Jones recalls telling Hilfiger at the time, âNo problem. Sheâs a fine mââââ.â
âShe had the most beautiful legs I ever saw in my life,â he continued. âWrong father, though.â
