Queen Mary and King Frederik prepare for imminent lifestyle change with big move

It’s officially the end of the summer season for King Frederik and Queen Mary, which means an imminent lifestyle change for the Danish royals.

After a four-month seasonal stay at Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace, the royals are relocating for the remainder of the year. 

Mary and Frederik are expected to return to their winter residence, Frederik’s Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen, on 26 September, where they will call home until the spring.

Amalienborg has been an official residence for the royals for over 200 years after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794. The grand property sits right in the heart of Copenhagen and consists of four palaces, built around an octagonal courtyard. 

Mary and Frederik made their last public appearance at Amalienborg on 26 May to celebrate the King’s 58th birthday. The royal couple, joined by their son, Prince Vincent, and their daughter, Princess Josephine, waved to members of the public who had gathered in the courtyard below. 

During the winter months at Amalienborg, the Danish royals stay at their private family residence, Frederik VIII’s Palace, which spans 48,400 square feet and underwent extensive renovations in 2010. Mary previously opened up to HELLO! about the family life at Amalienborg and how their typical mornings look.

“In the morning we make porridge, and all sit around the dining table,” she once told us. 

“Then we talk and eat, while our dog Ziggy runs in and out. It’s really cosy.”

Mary and Frederik’s summer break

Mary and Frederik were welcomed to Fredensborg Palace, set in the northern hinterlands of Zealand, in May with a special ceremony. Their four children, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent, and Princess Josephine, were absent for the occasion. “The children also come by from time to time. I don’t know exactly when, but this is also their home, and that brings us great joy,” Frederik explained.

The Danish royals tend to retreat for the summer break to their residence in southern Jutland, Gråsten Palace, where they can relax in the countryside and go horse riding. 

Sharing snapshots from the royal family’s summer stay this year, the Palace shared a glimpse of the royal couple exploring the scenic landscape and their two Australian Border Collies, Grace and Coco, making the most of the sunshine outdoors.
