Queen Camilla owed ‘outstanding debt’ by stepson Prince Harry: ‘Chances are slim’

Before Prince Harry settles back into life in the UK in close proximity to the royal family, the Duke owes his stepmother Queen Camilla an “outstanding debt”, a royal expert claims.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are set to return to British soil with their two children by the end of the month, where they will remain as private individuals and non-working royals. Since stepping down as a working royal in 2020, Harry has built a life with his wife and children in the US while the rift between him and his family in the UK has deepened. 

The Duke has spoken publicly about members of the royal family, including unfavourably of his stepmother Camilla. While there’s the question of how Harry will reconnect with the royals and whether he will spend Christmas with them in Sandringham this December, royal author Robert Jobson said “there is a debt outstanding first” after Harry “slammed” Camilla in his 2023 memoir Spare. 

“He wrote that she had ‘sacrificed’ him ‘on her personal PR altar.’ Camilla kept quiet. The debt to his brother has not been paid either,” the author wrote for the Daily Mail. However, Robert claimed the chances of Harry standing up and apologising “are slim”. 

“But if the monarchy is going to unite, it is essential,” he added.

What has Harry said about Camilla?

Harry’s bombshell memoir Spare made several critical comments about his stepmother, Queen Camilla. 

The Duke claimed that he and Prince William had pleaded with their father, King Charles, not to marry Camilla. “We pumped his hand, wished him well. No hard feelings,” Harry wrote of their father deciding to go ahead with the wedding. “We recognised that he was finally going to be with the woman he loved, the woman he’d always loved.”

In another part of the book, Harry wondered whether Camilla would be cruel to him, like a “wicked stepmother”, stating that his brother “long harboured suspicions about the Other Woman”.

In another interview in 2023, Harry told 60 Minutes’ Anderson Cooper about his stepmother: “She was the villain, she was a third person in the marriage, she needed to rehabilitate her image.”

“The need for her to rehabilitate her image… That made her dangerous because of the connections that she was forging within the British press,” he added.

Lady Lansdowne, a close friend and confidante of Camilla’s, previously spoke to The Times about how Camilla reacted to Harry’s comments in his memoir. “Of course it bothers her, of course it hurts,” she revealed.

“But she doesn’t let it get to her. Her philosophy is always, ‘Don’t make a thing of it and it will settle down – least said, soonest mended.'”
