Princess Sophie of Prussia looked incredible on Sunday, 1 March, at the reopening of the Hohenzollern Crypt at Berlin Cathedral. The 47-year-old donned an elegant dress by Alessandra Rich in the classic navy blue and white colourway.

The stylish midi dress had a timeless silhouette with a belted waist, a tailored white collar and gentle shoulder pads. The royal, who is married to Georg Friedrich, Prince of Prussia, wore her hair in a lightly curled style that showed off her pretty pearl drop earrings.

Part of the designer brand’s current collection, the ‘Polka-dot silk satin shirt dress’ retails for £1,319. It has a distinct feminine flair, with the lustrous drape of blue silk and a polka dot motif.

The late Princess Diana also wore a similar dress in 1985. Pictured in her sitting room in Kensington Palace with her lady-in-waiting Anne Beckwith-Smith, her navy blue number had an almost identical collar and colourway.

Princess Kate’s love affair with polka dots

The Princess of Wales has a plethora of polka dot dresses in her wardrobe. The mother-of-three has consistently worn the style for many years. “When someone wears polka dots, they want to portray a fun-ness, a sort of playfulness. When you think of polka dots, you instantly soften,” colour psychologist, Tash Bradley, previously told HELLO!.

It’s safe to say that when Kate does don dotty pieces, Alessandra Rich ensembles are often her first port of call. She has nine of their creations, and four of them feature the famous print.

Kate’s most instantly recognisable Alessandra Rich dress is one she wore in 2018 for the then-Prince Charles’s official 70th birthday portraits. Clearly one of her favourites, she donned it the following year, in 2019, at Bletchley Park. The royal’s navy blue dress featured the brand’s signature preppy collar and cuff detailing.

Although Kate’s dress is a past-season buy, Monsoon’s ‘Stella’ dress is a worthy royal fashion dupe. Priced at £75, it has the same decorative lacy collar, polka dots and a tie at the waist.

Alessandra Rich’s history

Alessandra Rich’s namesake label was founded over sixteen years ago, in 2010. The brand claims it “deliberately distances” itself from “conventional aesthetics,” explaining it designs clothes for shoppers who “see fashion as both language and play.”
