Perfectly Round Egg Sells for $500 at Auction

A perfectly round, “one-in-a-billion” egg sold at an auction for over $500.

An egg handler at Fenton Farm on the Somerset and Devon border in England discovered the anomaly late last year. After finding the egg, Alison Greene decided to take it to auction. Earlier this week, the egg sold for £420, equivalent to almost $550.

“It felt like watching one of my children in a sports race when everyone was bidding. It was just brilliant,” Greene told BBC. “To everyone that did bid, I’m just very, very grateful.”

The auction occurred at Bearnes Hampton Littlewood Auctioneers, a large fine art and antique auctioneers and valuers business in the South West England. All proceeds went to the Devon Rape Crisis charity, which supports local sexual violence and abuse survivors.

Dr. Davina Cull, the charity’s chief executive told The Independent, “We are delighted with Ali’s efforts to fundraise for us from her ‘egg-celent’ find.”

She added:  “The funds generated through the auction are at least enough to support one survivor of rape and sexual violence in Devon who come to our service in need of vital help.”

For three years, Greene has worked for the Fenton Farm and has encountered more than 42 million eggs — about 30,000 a week. But this specific egg caught her eye.

“It was really surprising because they roll in a specific way and this one just didn’t — it just stood out,” Greene told The Guardian in January. “It’s now something that nobody else has. Elon Musk hasn’t got a round egg has he?”

After seeing a similar egg sell for £200 in Berkshire in December, Greene asked her boss if she could sell theirs for charity. To preserve the oddity, Greene covered it in lard and then encased it in salt — a typical practice before iceboxes and refrigerators.
