Oliver Hudson is part of an acting dynasty – his mother is Oscar winner Goldie Hawn, sister is Oscar nominee Kate Hudson, stepfather is Emmy nominee Kurt Russell and his half-brother is Marvel star Wyatt Russell.
So it’s no surprise at all that Oliver’s own children are keen to stay in the family business, with his eldest son Wilder making his debut in 2025, and son Bodhi and 12-year-old daughter Rio also eager to get in front of the camera.
But after watching his family navigate the curious world of Hollywood, Oliver has decided to make one very important decision – follow his own mom’s advice and make Rio, whom he calls “pure performance,” wait until she is 18 before she can appear in movies.
“My mother with Kate said, ‘You’re not going to do anything but plays until you’re 18-years-old, then you can go off and do your stuff.’ So I’m following in those footsteps, similarly to my mother,” Oliver told HELLO!
“I’m saying, ‘Go be in plays, be an amazing dancer on the dance team, be you, and we’ll figure all of that stuff out when you’re a bit older.’ To subject her to whatever the rigors might be of being a child actor… we’ve seen it go great, we’ve seen it be detrimental, and why risk that? If you’ve got it, you’ve got it, you can wait a few years.”
Oliver was Kate’s last-minute date to the 2026 Actor Awards after her partner Danny Fujikawa came down with an illness, and he was clearly over the moon to support his sister as she makes the rounds this awards season. Kate is Oscar-nominated for her work in the biopic Song Sung Blue.
“It’s been a whirlwind, honestly,” he said. “Especially for her, obviously, having to do the whole dog and pony show This is nuts, and she hasn’t experienced this since Almost Famous [in 2001] – but now we’re all older and we get to experience it with her and for her to be celebrated is incredible.”
In 2001, Kate was nominated for her groundbreaking role as Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous. “We were celebrating her, but I was a 24-year-old dude who was doing my own stuff instead,”‘ said Oliver of that time.
“That’s the beauty of our family, we celebrate each other and we love what we do, but it’s not as important as other people might make it. We relish in the success of everyone’s accomplishments, but at the same time, it’s like, ‘Amazing, but you know there’s more important things… to be straight up!”
Oliver shared that he doesn’t believe Kate cares either way if she wins, but added: “Do we want to win? She doesn’t care. But I care! I do, and I don’t even know why because, truly, art is so subjective. But I think that people need to recognize the difficulty of a role like this, and she does it with grace and beauty and her voice is amazing and she just hits all the notes.”
Oliver welcomed his three children with wife Erinn Bartlett, and Kate is mom to three children who are also looking to enter the industry. Kate revealed in February 2026 that her eldest son, 22-year-old Ryder Robinson, is pursuing a career in acting after graduating from NYU.
