Nicole Kidman shared a rare update on how she’s feeling following her split from husband Keith Urban.
During a conversation with Ariana Grande for Interview Magazine, Kidman, 58, said, “I’m hanging in there,” when Grande, 32, asked how she was doing. While the interview was published on Monday, November 24, the chat took place on October 19. Weeks earlier, Kidman filed for divorce from Urban, also 58, on September 30 after 19 years of marriage.
Later in the Interview conversation, Kidman gushed about filming Practical Magic 2 over the summer in London with costars Sandra Bullock, Maisie Williams and Joey King.
“I have such a strong relationship with all those women, so I felt protected and loved,” she explained. “It was just very, very safe.”
While much of the conversation was focused on Grande’s role in Wicked: For Good, she and Kidman also traded stories about what it was like to become famous at a young age.
“There was a tricky adjustment period in the very beginning, when my pop career took off the way that it did,” said Grande, who released her debut album, Yours Truly, in 2013 at age 20. “And I hope this doesn’t sound ungrateful, but it’s just a big adjustment when your life changes in that very drastic way.”
Kidman, meanwhile, rose to fame in the U.S. after starring in 1990’s Days of Thunder opposite future husband Tom Cruise, from whom she split in 2001.
“Well, you’re very young, and then suddenly you’re put into this fishbowl and everything is dissected,” the Oscar winner recalled of her early days in Hollywood. “It starts to get very, very difficult, and then you overthink it and then you get scared and then you get hurt, and then you go, ‘Now I don’t want to go out. I don’t want to venture into this world.’ I get it.”
She added, “It’s just a constant push-pull. But I think that exists for everyone.”
Kidman and Urban, who share daughters Sunday, 17, and Faith, 14, tied the knot in 2006 after a whirlwind romance. (Kidman also shares daughter Bella, 32, and son Connor, 30, with Cruise, 63.)
Us Weekly confirmed their split on September 29, and Kidman filed for divorce one day later, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their breakup. She also submitted a potential parenting plan, child support plan and “parenting seminar order.”
According to documents obtained by Us, the parenting plan included a request from Kidman to be named the “primary residential parent” of Sunday and Faith. The plan also proposed that the girls spend 306 days out of the year with their mother and 59 days with their father, including every other weekend.
While Kidman and Urban’s breakup came as a shock to many fans, an insider exclusively told Us last month that the split was a “long time coming.”
“Keith has moved on and has been open with Nicole about where he stands,” the source added. “The two had grown apart quietly over time, and by the end, the decision to separate was more about acceptance than surprise.”
