A recent Morrissey concert was abruptly cut short after fans’ attempts to embrace the singer as he performed quickly got out of hand.

The English singer, 65, was performing an encore set at the Fair Park Music Hall in Dallas on Saturday, Nov. 2 when a fan slowly approached him onstage and reached out for a hug, according to fan video shared to social media and with TMZ.

As security tried to hold the woman back, another fan made their way onstage and reached out to shake the musician’s hand, which he did successfully before he was pulled away, too. Morrissey continued to sing “First of the Gang to Die” as the fans approached.

Audience members getting onstage and embracing Morrissey as he performs is a “very common” occurrence, George Allen, co-host of a Morrissey podcast, told the Manchester Evening News. But in Dallas, the practice was seemingly taken too far.

Before long, multiple fans had joined the action, and at one point, fan video shows a man waving his hands up and down onstage. Morrissey is quickly ushered offstage, thus ending the show. A security guard seemingly injured his foot in the scuffle, as he is seen in the video hobbling off the stage.

The former Smiths frontman has not commented on the incident, but did share photos of the gig to Instagram with the caption, “12 from Dallas, November 2.”

His account also reposted video of the show shared by a fan with the caption, “Morrissey is hug bombed at the end of every show but I’ve never seen this many try lol. No one ruin it for us in Newark next week, okay?!”

The rocker is currently on tour through the end of the month, and is next scheduled to perform on Monday, Nov. 4 in Little Rock, Ark.

“Stage invasions are very common at Morrissey gigs but this one looked particularly messy. It’s not clear if it was Morrissey’s choice to leave the stage or if he was directed by the crew but the fans did seem to go a bit far,” Allen told the Manchester Evening News.
