Mindy Kaling knows what she wants.

The multi-hyphenate’s latest creation, Netflix sitcom Running Point, is a different swing than Kaling, 45, is used to, because of how little emphasis it puts on romance, she tells PEOPLE. But she still made sure to get some “sexiness” in there.

“[Kate Hudson’s] character, and a lot of the characters in this, romance is not even in the top five things that they’re worried about in their life, and I’m not really used to writing that,” Kaling tells PEOPLE. “I’m used to writing characters who dream of having a boyfriend, getting married, that solving their problems.”

In Running Point — which stars Hudson, Drew Tarver, Brenda Song, Justin Theroux and Scott MacArthur — the characters are “not worried about” romance, “but sexiness follows them everywhere,” as Kaling puts it.

“The show is super sexy and there’s lots of sexy situations — and that’s just because I like that,” she admits. “I’m a horny old woman who wants to come home and turn on my Netflix and just see Jay Ellis having vibes with [Hudson]. Like, who doesn’t wanna see that?”

After hearing Kaling’s description, Hudson is abashed to admit, “Oh my God, that means I’m a horny old woman too.”

Hudson’s character Isla, though, “wants to be taken seriously” as he steps up to lead her family’s dynasty basketball team, the Los Angeles Waves, according to Kaling.

“She has all this stuff with her family and then romance — it is a romantic show. There’s romance in it, but it’s not anybody’s top priority, which is a fun change for me,” she says of Running Point, which she created with Ike Barinholtz and David Stassen.

Hudson agrees. “That was one of the big things for me … Look, don’t get me wrong, I love a rom-com. I love when it’s all about the relationships. But to do a comedy set in such a high-stakes environment that’s about family dynamics — to me [that] is just so much fun.”

“It’s sort of a much more full, honest portrayal of a woman’s life than just the pursuit of love,” she says.
