Michelle Obama vulnerably opened up about a recent, emotional first that she experienced with her daughters Sasha Obama, 25, and Malia Obama, 28.
The former First Lady got candid on her podcast with her brother Craig Robinson, IMO, along with their special guest, Megan Thee Stallion.
During her time living in the White House, neither she nor her daughters got to experience simple things like driving a car on their own.
In the podcast episode, Michelle revealed that for Motherâs Day, her daughters took her on a unique journey.
She recalled: âI just started driving. I just, for the first time, drove in a car with my daughters by ourselves. That was their Motherâs Day gift for me and I could cry because they donât live in a bubble, as youâve seen, and one of the reasons is, they did and they donât want it. They donât want parts of it.â
The trio made a day of it, as Sasha drove them from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and they visited spots solo that most people can freely visit, without a driver or a motorcade escorting them for safety precautions.
Aside from that newfound sense of freedom, another first for Michelle was her daughterâs driving her.
Megan interjected: âAnd how did you feel about being a mom in the passengerâs seat?â
Michelle responded: âIt was good. I mean, Sasha was a good driver. I had never driven with her cause we couldnât drive with them when we were in the White House. We still canât.â
She explained: âI mean, weâre driven â weâre secured in a motorcade, so they didnât learn how to drive from me. They learned how to drive from their [secret service] agents. So they were taught well. Iâd never experienced that freedom.â
They visited In-N-Out Burger and McDonaldâs, specifically for their fries. Michelle revealed that she had no issue using the drive-thru and that the employees âdidnât knowâ it was them, because she kept her appearance low-key with a hat and Sasha ordered for them.
Michelle and her family members have entered a new era in her life with a new level of autonomy, which is worth celebrating
She expressed: âIâm 62 years old â thatâs starting to put some normal back into it â itâs just like a simple car ride. Thatâs joy. Thatâs gratitude. Thatâs happiness.â
Sasha and Malia live together in Los Angeles. Sasha graduated from the University of Southern California in 2023, where she studied sociology. Malia graduated from Harvard in 2021, where she studied visual and environmental studies.
