Fresh details have emerged about the cost of Meghan Markle’s headline-making appearance at a Balenciaga fashion show in Paris, with reports suggesting the trip may have cost around $250,000 in expenses alone.
The details come from an extract in journalist Tom Bower’s latest book, Betrayal: Power, Deceit And The Fight For The Future Of The Royal Family, which examines the Duchess of Sussex’s evolving public image and the fierce battle for attention between global brands and celebrity figures.
According to Tom, Meghan herself played a central role in orchestrating the moment. “The coup was masterminded by Meghan herself,” Tom writes. “Balenciaga had been ‘cancelled’ in 2022 for featuring children alongside fetish-themed teddy bears. In the aftermath of the uproar, Balenciaga had hired a new creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, previously employed by Valentino. Meghan had worn a few of Piccioli’s costumes.”
He continues: “She called him with a suggestion. In return for all her expenses, she would make a surprise entrance at his show. In the battle against their rivals for publicity, Balenciaga calculated Meghan’s proposal was a no-brainer. Nicole Kidman was paid millions of dollars by Chanel, so $250,000 for Meghan’s expenses was comparatively cheap.”
Breaking down the Paris trip
While neither the Duchess nor the fashion house have confirmed the figures, industry estimates suggest the costs of the trip could quickly add up.
The most significant expense is believed to have been travel. A private jet from Los Angeles to Paris can cost around $200,000 for a round trip, according to aviation charter estimates.
Accommodation was reportedly at the luxurious Hôtel Plaza Athénée, one of Paris’s most iconic fashion week hotels, where suites and premium rooms start at approximately $2,500 per night.
Meghan was also accompanied by her trusted glam team, including longtime makeup artist Daniel Martin, whose professional rates reportedly start at around $2,000 per appearance, excluding travel and accommodation.
The Balenciaga wardrobe
Fashion also formed a key part of the headline moment. During the Paris appearance, Meghan wore two Balenciaga outfits, one black and one white, with industry estimates suggesting the couture looks could be valued at around $50,000 each.
While luxury fashion houses often loan garments for high-profile appearances, the value of such pieces still contributes to the overall scale of the production surrounding major fashion week events.
A high-stakes publicity moment
The extract suggests Balenciaga saw the Duchess’s appearance as a strategic opportunity to generate global headlines at a crucial moment for the brand.
Following the controversy that engulfed the label in 2022, the appointment of Pierpaolo Piccioli as creative director was widely viewed as a fresh start for the fashion house.
A surprise celebrity appearance at Paris Fashion Week offered the potential to dominate the news cycle and redirect attention toward the brand’s new era. Within the fashion industry, spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on celebrity exposure is not unusual.
Major luxury houses routinely invest heavily in ambassadors and front-row appearances. As Tom notes in the extract, Nicole Kidman’s long-standing relationship with Chanel has reportedly involved multimillion-dollar deals, putting the cost of Meghan’s reported expenses into perspective.
Tom was criticised by Harry and Meghan for his “fixation” on them and their relationship with the royal family.
Further pages of the novel, which is out now, claim the Prince and Princess of Wales also considered Meghan “a threat” as tensions escalated before the Sussexes decided to leave Britain for a life in Montecito, California, with their young family.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 14 March, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan rebutted the author’s suggestions and said he “crossed the line”.
“Mr Bower’s commentary has long crossed the line from criticism into fixation,” the statement read. It continued: “This is someone who has publicly stated, ‘The monarchy in fact depends on actually obliterating the Sussexes from our state of life,’ language that speaks for itself.
“He has made a career out of constructing ever more elaborate theories about people he does not know and has never met. Those interested in facts will look elsewhere; those seeking deranged conspiracy and melodrama know exactly where to find him.”
