Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are producing a new wedding-centered movie for Netflix despite their past flops with the streaming giant.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will produce an adaptation of âThe Wedding Date,â the first in a six-book series from New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory, according to Deadline.Â
âThe Wedding Date,â which was published in 2018, follows Alexa Monroe, who agrees to be a fake date for Drew Nichols at his exâs wedding after they get stuck in an elevator.
A rep for Harry and Markle, who famously got married in 2018, did not immediately return Page Sixâs request for comment.
In 2020, Markle and Harry signed a $100 million, multi-year deal with Netflix, nearly nine months after they stepped down as senior members of the royal family.
News of the Sussexesâ forthcoming film comes nearly five months after Page Six exclusively reported that their deal with Netflix would end this year.
However, the coupleâs company, Archewell Productions, agreed to a new first-look deal with the streaming giant â but for far less pay.
A source told us in July, âThere are more TV projects coming soon with both the duke and duchess.â
The âSpareâ author, 41, and Markle are set to follow in the footsteps of former President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle Obama, whose production company, Higher Ground, has a similar deal with Netflix.
So far, the Sussexesâ partnership has generated documentaries, scripted series, films, sports, and lifestyle programming, including âPolo,â âHeart of Invictus,â âHarry & Meghan,â and âLive to Lead.â
Markle, 44, also has a lifestyle show titled âWith Love, Meghan,â however, the second season flopped, failing to crack Netflixâs coveted Top 10 shows.
The âSuitsâ alumâs âWith Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration,â which premiered Dec. 3, also didnât make the top 10 list.
The Sussexes are also producing a film adaptation of Carley Fortuneâs hit romance novel, âMeet Me at the Lake,â for Netflix. However, Page Six exclusively reported in July that the film had not yet tapped a director or cast.
