Call the Midwife fans, rejoice: weâre officially getting a prequel! The beloved period drama series, which follows a group of midwives living in the East End of London in the late â50s and beyond, is not only coming back for a 16th season, but is getting an exciting new spin-off this year.Â
While viewers eagerly await the prequel set in the Second World War, the showâs creator, Heidi Thomas, has already teased what we can expect. Heidi shared at the Radio Times Covers Party 2026 that Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina and Sister Monica Joan are all set to return. On top of the prequel news, a spin-off movie is in the works too, so fans can be sure to expect much more of their favourite midwives on-screen.Â
The BBC dramaâs stars have been on TV for more than a decade since the showâs debut in 2012. While fans are familiar with their on-screen romances, off-screen, many of the cast have found love away from the camera. Read on to find out who the cast are romantically linked withâŠ
Helen George has found love with real estate expert, Dan Innes in real-life. The actress, who plays Trixie Franklin on the show, went Instagram official with her beau in February 2025 following her split from her former Call the Midwife co-star, Jack Aston, in 2023.Â
Speaking to The Mailâs You magazine in December 2025, Helen said of her new romance. âItâs a very happy relationship.â Â
âItâs lovely to be with someone outside the industry. Iâm not defined by my job, and Iâm really interested in meeting the people he works with.â
Dan has appeared in several selfies and group photos on Helenâs social media and even joined her on a recent family holiday to Lapland.Â
Helen shares two daughters with her ex, Jack, with whom she was in a relationship for seven years. They welcomed their first daughter, Wren, in September 2017, and their second daughter, Lark, in November 2021. Â
Jenny Agutter, who plays Sister Julienne on Call the Midwife, was married to her late husband Johan Tham for over three decades and welcomed a now-grown-up son, Jonathan, together. She met the Swedish hotelier when he was a director of Cliveden Hotel in Buckinghamshire.
Johan sadly passed away from cancer at the age of 81 in December 2025.
Speaking of their first meeting, Jenny told the Daily Mail in 2022: âOne of the things about meeting people and forming relationships as an actor is that others have an idea of who you are before they meet you. Thatâs hard in any relationship, particularly with men.Â
âWhen John and I met I did not feel he had any sense of who I was at all, but he wanted to find out, and that made a big difference. Iâm still finding out about him 31 years on.â
Judy Parfitt has starred as Sister Monica Joan on the show since the very first episode in 2012. Off-screen, the actress had a very famous husband.Â
Judy was married to the late actor Tony Steedman for nearly four decades. After working on a play together at Birminghamâs Alexandra Theatre in 1960, they tied the knot in 1963 and welcomed their son, David, in 1964.
The couple were together up until Tony passed away in February 2001 after being diagnosed with vascular dementia. While itâs not explicitly mentioned in the show, Judyâs Call the Midwife character is similarly suffering from dementia.Â
âHaving watched my husband, the actor Tony Steedman, succumb to this terrible disease over 10 years, depicting Sister Monica Joanâs condition is still an extremely important aspect of the role to me,â she penned in a piece for Mail Online in 2014.
Laura Main has been in the spotlight for years thanks to her role as Nurse Shelagh Turner on Call the Midwife. While the actress shares updates about her career on social media, much less is known about her personal life away from the camera.Â
As of February 2026, she is believed to be single. She previously dated theatre actor Stephen McGlynn between 2012 and 2017.Â
Fenella Woolgar starred as Sister Hilda on the show from 2018 up until 2022. Off-screen, sheâs been married to NHS doctor Dr Robert Harland since 2006, and they share three sons.
Speaking to You Magazine, the actress opened up about their wedding: âOur best woman made a very funny speech. She told Rob to put his hand over mine, then said, âThatâs the last time youâll ever have the upper hand.'â
While Stephen McGann plays Dr Patrick Turner on Call the Midwife, his connection to the series seeps into his personal life. The actor is actually married to the showâs creator, Heidi Thomas, and has been since 1998. They share a son together.Â
Jessica Raine starred as Jenny Lee in the early seasons of the show before making her exit in 2014. Off-screen, the actress has found love with another star in the acting world.Â
The star has been married to Emmy-nominated actor Tom Goodman-Hill, known for the Netflix drama Baby Reindeer, Humans, Spy and more since 2015.
Tom has two children from a previous relationship.
Cliff Parisi has been married to his long-term wife, Tara Wyer, since 2010. He has five children, including one son with Tara.Â
In a previous interview, Cliff said the BBC One producer âwasnât impressed with the fact I was an actor at allâ.Â
âI had this new girlfriend and took her to watch some filming, and I said to Tara, âWhat do you think of my new girlfriend?â It was obvious she disapproved,â he told Saga Magazine in 2024.Â
âSo, I said, âWell, you go out with me then.â That was 15 years ago and after going out that night, we havenât been apart since.â
Leonie Elliott, who plays Nurse Lucille Anderson, left the show in 2023 after its 12th season. The star tends to keep her private life on the down-low, and doesnât appear to have a partner as of 2026.Â
Chatting to HELLO! in 2023 after her exit announcement and ahead of the Christmas special, she said: âIt is really strange! When youâve been a part of such a special show for so long, this will be my first Christmas special watching it without Lucille being in it.Â
âSo it will feel strange but Iâll definitely be tuning in to see what the guys have been up to, what theyâre doing in Poplar.âÂ
