Singer Michael McDonald turned 74 on February 12 and amid his birthday festivities, weâre delving into his marriage of 43 years and his family life with his two kids.
Amy Holland is a New Yorker who comes from a musical family. Both of her parents were singers with her dad Harry Boersma being an opera singer, and Esmereldy Boersma, her mother, being a country singer.
She moved to Los Angeles to pursue her singing career and during her teen years, she got signed with Capitol Records. Amy released her self-titled debut album in 1980 and the rest was history. A year later, she was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
The duo crossed paths in 1980 when Amy was actively working on her album On Your Every Word and he became her producer. They knew they were the ones for each other, and they got married three years later.Â
They welcomed their children Scarlett, 34, and Dylan, 37, into the world together. Dylan is also a singer and the frontman to his band Dylan McDonald & The Avians, however Scarlett has kept her life personal.
Amy recalled the special moment she met Michael and said: âHe was adorable. At the time, my boyfriend was playing guitar in the band, but when Mike opened his mouth to sing, and I said, âOh, thatâs it.â I couldnât believe that sound was coming out of an 18-year-old guy. It was a lot higher then, but it was The Voice,â per The Giving Arts.
She added: âWe both kind of had a crush on each other. I used to work in a fabric store where I sold buttons and zippers. Well, Mike actually walked into the store one day shortly after I had met him, and I just about lost it. I did not expect to see him. Iâm not sure if I even worked the rest of the day. I think my co-workers were just fanning me in the back.â
What has Michael said about Amy?
Michael gives credit to Amy for her strong virtues. He shared with People: âWe are not perfect for sure. And a big part of the success of my marriage is my wifeâs forgiveness of my behavior over the years and my selfishness is what it comes down to and dealing with all the character defects that come from my own fear of life.â

Amy became diagnosed with cancer in 1986. She went through a rigorous and demanding chemotherapy routine and thankfully she became cancer-free.
Michael shared that the hardships during that time taught him just how much she means to him.
She said: âI learned so much from her in that experience about love. And those are things that even at the rough times that we mightâve had later because weâre married⊠I always had that to hang on to as far as who she was and how important she really [is] to me,â per People.
