Scooby-Doo fans, a new revival is in the works, and we now have a cast!
Netflix announced on Wednesday, March 18 that the central Scooby gang, the Mystery Machine misfits, has finally been cast for the yet-to-be-titled show.
The cast of the early aughts’ live action films, Matthew Lillard, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr. & Linda Cardellini
While the franchise first began back in 1969 in animated form, with the beloved Hanna-Barbera show Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, two live action films released in the early 2000s remain favorites as well.
2002 and 2004’s film versions starred Freddie Prinze Jr. as Fred Jones, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne Blake, Linda Cardellini as Velma Dinkley, and Matthew Lillard as Shaggy Rogers, with the voice of Scooby-Doo provided by Neil Fanning.
Take a look at the new cast of Netflix’s Scooby-Doo, and where you might’ve seen them before…
Maxwell Jenkins, 20, will play the gang’s default leader and all around smooth guy Fred Jones. His parents are the founders of Midnight Circus in Chicago, and Maxwell grew up performing as an acrobat, juggler, tightrope walker, and more starting at the age of just three.
He made his acting debut at the age of eight in the show Betrayal, and has since played notable roles in shows like Sense8, Lost in Space, Reacher, Dear Edward, and The Bondsman. He is also known for not only his philanthropy as part of Midnight Circus’ efforts, but also as a spokesperson for NCAI and ASPCA. He is currently a student (and cheerleader) at the University of California, Los Angeles.
McKenna Grace, 19, will play the redhead damsel in distress with a karate chop to match, Daphne Blake. McKenna began acting at the age of five, and has earned much acclaim for her turns in shows like Crash & Bernstein, The Young and the Restless, and The Handmaid’s Tale, earning a Primetime Emmy nomination for the latter.
Her work in movies like Gifted, I, Tonya (both 2017), The Bad Seed (2018), Captain Marvel (2019), the Ghostbusters franchise (2021-24), Regretting You (2025), and Scream 7 (2026) has made her one of the most successful young stars currently working in Hollywood. McKenna is also a musician, releasing her debut EP Bittersweet 16 in March of 2023, and its follow-up, Autumn Leaves, just a few months later.
Abby Ryder Fortson, 18, will play the group’s brains Velma “Jinkies!” Dinkley. Abby made her screen debut in an episode of The Mindy Project at the age of five, before being cast as Cassie Lang in Marvel’s Ant-Man movies opposite Paul Rudd.
Her most notable role came in 2023, leading the adaptation of Judy Blume’s novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. with Rachel McAdams. Since then, she was cast as a recurring character in the HBO hit The Pitt and the 2026 film Carousel, which was released in January at the Sundance Film Festival.
Tanner Hagen, 21, will play the food-crazy, lovable Norville “Shaggy” Rogers. While Tanner doesn’t have as extensive a list of credits as his co-stars, he did also appear in an episode of The Pitt, sharing a credit with his co-star Abby.
Tanner made his screen debut in 2018 in the short Timmy Slays the Talent Show, going on to then appear in several Dhar Mann YouTube episodes. He has since mostly starred in a variety of shorts and TV movies, and has multiple film projects already in the pipeline for 2026.
We don’t have any confirmation on who/what will play the live action Scooby-Doo, with Neil voicing a Scooby through a mix of CGI and puppeteering. The official logline for the show so far reads: “The series, which explores how the teens first teamed up, follows old friends Shaggy and Daphne during their final summer at camp.” “The two get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have witnessed a supernatural murder. With help from the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma and the strange but ever-so-handsome new kid Freddy, they set out to solve the case that’s pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.”
